I recently ordered a Data Cable for my Motorola v188. It didn't come with a CD, but i found the software later on.

Basically the software recognizes my phone (mobile PhoneTools 3.5b) It makes a connection with it. I can transfer my Phonebook and whatnot to my computer.

I open Media center.. i try to transfer a wallpaper and it says "Connecting" for a while.. then "Could not establish connection with the phone"
 
I'm not sure on the V188 support, but I know v4 of Mobile Phone Tools tends to have better support and reliability for other Motos. There's something quirky with the Media Center with a lot of phones though. MPT v4 is pretty cheap on Ebay, but you'd want to confirm it would fix your problem before buying it. HowardForums or Motomodders.net would probably have an answer for you.
