my wireless B cant reach the second floor. does wireless G have better range? or should i get MIMO?

I don't see how going from B to G will get you an improvement, since the effective range for B is about 350ft outside/100ft inside. Most likely it's your hardware. My 5y/o Linksys gets me signat thru floors and walls without a problem.

Ya, depends on hardware. My 2Wire "b" only gets me like 35' while my dlink "g" gets me close to 100' indoors.

Does anybody know if you can set this up as an access point (turn off DHCP)? I question it mostly because they sell an access point.

Edit: Can someone take me back to wi-fi 101 and remind me what a bridge is for?

AFAIK, this router can function as a "gaming wireless adaptor". It can be connected to a device with an Ethernet jack (like game consoles, non-wireless media players) to make it wireless. Just like it says in the description: "Connect a game console to play competitors on the network or over the Internet".

I do not have a hands-on experience with it, but I remember reading about this functionality as it relates to making MediaMVP media player wireless.

Well, I jumped in and got one under the assumption that it will work as a bridge. I brought it home and found out that it doesn't support a "bridge mode". If you have router that supports WDS (such as a 2nd wr850g), then they can use WDS mode and it can serve as a gaming adapter. Unfortunately, I have a D-Link as my main router that doesn't support WDS.

HOWEVER, this will router will work with OpenWRT, (ie, the opensource linksys wrt*.* linux software) which supports pretty much everything you can imagine for a wireless network device! So, if you want to save some $$$, play around with a linux opensource project, and learn a thing or two, this can be used as a budget wireless gaming adapter (ie, bridge)!

I bought two awhile back at ChumpUSA and found that they didn't support WPA in bridge or access point mode. Motorola customer support was rude and worthless and not at all concerned that their products (I got 2 of these routers, a wireless print server, and several cards) advertised support for WPA but in reality didn't support that encryption at all.

They couldn't understand why I wasn't happy just to use WEP. :Q

Maybe new firmware has solved problem but beware of poor support from Motorola.

So I could hook this up to my xbox via an ethernet cable and it would serve the same purpose as the $100 xbox wireless adapter?

Does it bother anyone else that it says it's a g router but it says the maximum data rate is 11mbps? That's usually typical of a b router. Any thoughts?

I would have picked one up for that price but they will not ship this item. "For in store pickup only" and it is not available in Minnesota. You may want to check if this is available in your area before you start digging into the spec's on it. You may waste a lot of time over nothing if it is not available.
