Hey guys!!

For those of you looking for new service in the Bay Area or wanting the new MOTOROLA V60t cell phone, here is a great deal (I'm not doing this as a referral..so don't accuse me. I just want to spread the deal to everyone out there)

I just got the Motorola v60t yesterday and it's such an awesome phone -- sleek and very compact! Has an LCD screen on the outside too even though it's a flip phone.

So I got it at this place in S.F called WorldComm Inc, also called Mobitel. The phone retails for $499, but it's $230 here (tax included). With a 1 year ATT activation service, you get $40 rebate back. With the 2 year ATT activation service, you get $80 rebate + $35 activation fee waivered. So I got the 2 year plan and ended up with the phone being roughly $150!. I got all the accessories with it too! Desktop charger, car charger, belt clip, leather case, hands-free, etc. EVERYTHING!!!

It's a pretty good deal considering the cheapest place I found the phone for was $270 without TAX.

My girlfriend got the PANASONIC ALLURE (very slim phone) for free after signing up for 1 year.

Just a heads up for those looking into new service cause I hate my CINGULAR service in the BAY AREA.

If you need more information, please do not hesitate to e-mail me. Good luck!!

This is a great phone as I picked one up a week ago. I was an existing wireless customer and wanted a deal which was hard since most stores are sticking close to list price which is $399.99. I went to an AT&T store and got an upgrade price of $349.99, yet still not satisfied as I knew a few cut rate dealers were selling them cheaper, I called AT&T customer service while standing there, they gave me an instant $50 credit on my account. On top of that I still get tto send in for the $80.00 rebate for the two year contract. They have a promotion that gives the extra battery, desktop charger, etc for free so the final deal is

399.99
- 50.00 upgrade discount
- 50.00 instant credit to account
- 80.00 rebate

$219.99 final price

In my opinion there is no phone better than this with AT&T service and I currently have or have used the Nokia 8260, Nokia 3360, Nokia 6160, and the Startac.

Ditto... my reception with it, is much better than it was before. I'm actually able to make phone calls from inside my house!

I just purchased the Motorola V60 about 2 weeks ago. Its the best phone I've had so far. I actually got it from an online vendor www.pagealertinc.com. It was listed at 289.99 with contract but i emailed them and they actually gave me an additional 10% off the phone. The phone ended up costing me 260.99 shipped, and after the $80 rebate $180.99 final cost. It came with an extra battery and a lot of other gadgets too. So if your not in the Bay area and want the phone for around $180 shipped check them out. www.pagealertinc.com

I read somewhere that ATT was going to switch to a GSM network sometime this year, they currently use CDMA or TDMA, forgot. So wouldn't buying a expensive phone become obsolete within the end of the year if they switch to GSM?

edit:
Press Release

They claim to have 100% GSM penetraion by end of 2002, so that would make CDMA/TDMA phones obsolete I would think.

AT&T is currently TDMA. They are converting to GSM. However, TDMA will continue to be supported...for the foreseeable future. Heck, there are still people who only use analog..

You can look at it this way: If you end up hating their service for any reason after a month or so, you only have 23 months to go!

AT&T is building out it's new high speed digital network now. I looked into the GSM phone because it offers fast data transfer ~144k, and it is available in my area, however it is not available in many areas and roaming is not much of an option. The existing TDMA service will be available for quite a while just like analog service is still available in most areas even though TDMA has been out for 10 years. Buy the phone now for about $200, use the best for two years, then turn around and FleaBay it for $150.00. How can you go wrong??? :D

Well, i guess it depends on where you live, I use Voicestream and they use GSM, seems to work/roam in every place I have use it ( Atlanta, Boston, NYC, Raliegh, San Francisco, most of Florida). Unless you live where the road is not paved, you should get decent GSM coverage which is expanding daily since ATT, Cingular, and Voicestream are expanding GSM coverage(which happens to be the world standard now). I read motorola actually sells a v60g (gsm) phone, the same thing, maybe att will sell that in a few months, might be something to consider.

The network that AT&T is building out is called GSM / GPRS and currently one can't roam on most other GSM networks. I am not sure as to compatibility but this is AT&T's 3g network and I would guess that the older GSM networks are not supported on the newer phones. Here is the current coverage map:

AT&T GSM Coverage Map

This is the network that eventually will over data rates in excess of 1mb sec. I hope this helps :)

sorry bout the empty post...

just wanted to say, let's hope att's gsm coverage is a helluva lot better than cingular's... i was gonna jump cingular's ship just now and join verizon (coincidentally, MY billing period ends the 26th of january) but if att is going to be offering competitive gsm service, then i will probably wait...

in general, i think gsm in the US just SUCKS. coverage is spotty in rural areas, which translates into an unreliable service. but even in urban areas like LA, where everybody and their mom has a cell phone, the lines get clogged. yes, gsm is the world standard, etc etc, but the US is not up to that standard just yet, and it's a pain having to use the service as it is still building up... it doesn't help that you have cingular overmarketing their nights and weekends so that that OFFPEAK time has become a PEAK time. there is not enough bandwidth to go around!

just look at the european and asian markets and how they already have tri-band gsm phones! the US is still stuck on gsm1900 only service, whereas the world is moving right along with gsm 800/900 and egsm 1800, etc technology...

well what can you do? either use a proven technology like cdma or tdma, or try to chase a continually developing one like gsm. <end of rant>

I'm on att now with the v60t.
Great phone, but the service...so so in the boston, ma area.
Its great during the day, but the nights and weekend minutes suck because i always get a fast busy signal (hmm..the network is way overloaded)
Wish they would come up with a plan with nights and weekends and no roaming anywhere!
Any ideas what the new promotions will be? How did you find out that they are ending the nights and weekend minutes?

Eh - w/ the 3rd generation (3G) technologies being developed - they'll all be compatible a few years down the road. I can't remember the specifics of what I read a few months back but it said something to the effect that the new techs (WCDMA, TDMA Edge) could communicate w/ each other's networks. GSM is based off TDMA from what I recall so I think it would evolve into TDMA Edge. What ATT is doing now is morphing their current 2G tech into 2.5G tech (GPRS).

And that's it for the telecomm class for today.

Does anyone know the difference between the V60c, V60t, and V60g? Would the different models have different prices? I'm in NYC, and planning on picking one up.

<< V60c = CDMA phone
V60t = TDMA phone
V60g = GSM phone

Just my guess

yeah, verizon is cdma still. att is tdma... and only cingular (not in texas) and voicestream (in texas) are on gsm... (cingular is tdma in texas, go figure). for the record, sprint is pcs, soon to be 3g.

I hope AT&T upgrades their network around here. I frequently get dumped into analog mode and voice mail alerts don't come through for hours. When I went to the store and complained they said the network is probably busy and I should call their service line to report it. When I asked how I was supposed to call their service line when I can't make a call because the network is busy, the girl just looked at me.

I was looking at this phone last weekend, and the salesman told me to hold off, since AT&T said there's an issue with the battery life on the v60t, and that they recalled it. I have the v8162, the older brother of the v60, and I can attest to the poor battery life. I can't imagine the battery life being better ont he v60t.
I would hold off until the 3G phones come out.
