We already knew that Motorola had plans to release 2-4 new Android smartphones by the end of the year, but what we didn’t know is that they are hoping to make one of those the most ridiculously powerful devices ever. Moto CEO Sanjay Jha, snuck in the gem of all gems yesterday in his speech at the Executives Club of Chicago, by announcing a 2GHz powered Android smartphone which should be released before the end of 2010. Wow.

Another Moto big wig also chimed in with a few more of the device’s details…

…this new phone is intended to incorporate everything that is technologically possible in a smartphone today. It will be based on Android, and include, like the iPhone 4, a gyroscope and add an Nvidia Tegra-based graphics processor with full Flash 10.1 hardware acceleration…

Anyone else speechless?

I'm almost sad that I've got 12 months left on my Moto Droid contract.

Times like this are when I'm glad I'm contract free. :D

Specs don't mean much though if the battery life sucks ass though. Also, hopefully this thing doesn't have MotoBlur and is easily rootable or it's pretty much dead in the water for me. Vanilla Android and root access have kept me coming back to the Droid with every new phone I've tried.

I could always buy the phone full price and ebay the Moto Droid, but you make a good point. The roms for the Droid are very polished and mature now, and light years ahead of any other mobile OS out there. Putting MotoBlur on a device that powerful would tick me off and be a foolish decision, IMO. MotoBlur is marketed more towards a younger, childish crowd, where as a device like this is going to be targeting enthusiasts and other high end users, ie, people who don't sit around on social networks all day.

unless it's powered by a tiny uranium pellet, i'm taking a pass..

Are you telling me that this sucker is nuclear?
No, no, no, no, no. This sucker's electrical. But I need a nuclear reaction to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity I need.

Actually, having used Motoblur now I miss it. I immediately shitcanned the widgets but the integration of the accounts in the system and all the little Motorola tweaks they had added (pin vs pattern unlock, separate screen/security timeouts, universal inbox, dialer/contacts tabs on the home screen, groups in the contact list along with better linking of contacts, etc) was a vast improvement over vanilla Android right out of the box. I know it's the fashionable thing to hate on with some mocking remarks about the kiddies but in actual use it's a nice improvement.

It does however slow the pace of upgrades (though I don't think anyone is happy with the pace of stock upgrades for that matter) and it would be nice if they didn't lock the shit out of the upcoming phones. However it sounds like they are doing exactly that with the new phones coming out.

edit: conversely, with no root and Motoblur and carrier tinkering, it can suck. Contact list was better with it, but on Verizon they had it locked to use their shitty software (when trying to use something directly out of contacts). Want to IM an email address? Have to use their homo text message using app. Want to see the address on a map or navigate to it? Have to use their VZ Nav instead of Google. There was something else they infuriated me with too that I can't remember right now.

That's great and all, but if Moto can launch a nice phone I'll like it. The Droid was an amazing piece of hardware, and it looks like they're releasing more like the Milestone XT720 which is the same processor and all. As long as Moto doesn't get in the same pattern of releasing slightly modded versions of its original phone over and over (lol RAZR), it should be ok. I just want to see innovation.

HTC does things a lot better. I quite honestly thing Motoblur is 10x worse than Sense. While it's an improvement to stock Android, it's still not great.

Yeah, they over did it with the RAZR line. But the Moto Droid is the most solidly constructed smartphone out there, still, after 7 months. That says something about their design team and engineering. I don't think many Droid owners now would mind if Motorola used nearly the same chassis to build this monster, albeit, with some minor tweaks to the keyboard and such.

Not sure if I'd like to see a 4.3in screen for a device like that or not. I like the size of the 3.7in screen, fits my pocket well. I've never used a 4.3in device, but the seem overly large for me when I've used them in the store.

HTC's SenseUI is better than MotoBlur, I agree but man, they are lacking in the hardware dept IMO. The Incredible is technically a great phone but feels cheap as hell to me.

Only thing I want my Droid to do (on stock Android, is perfect IMO... no overstuffed crap like Sense or Blur).... is to be intelligent about slide to unlock.

For instance, if I slide open the phone to use the keyboard... I should not need to slide to unlock again!

There should be a way to temporarily disable slide to unlock... because if I'm driving and it's in the car dock, I don't need to click the power button AND slide to unlock!

But will it be able to diagnose diseases like my Dr. McCoy Star Trek medical scanner? I think not!

Not sure why they announced this now. No one will buy a Droid 2 now.

eh, I doubt this is going to get picked up on CNN and I wonder how many potential customers read tech blogs anyway.

Besides, if someone told you that there was going to be a 3ghz phone in 2011 dissuade you from this 2ghz one? Things are always getting faster.

Why? A vague rumor from the CEO, a man almost completely uninvolved with product development, is hardly a reason to not buy one. Besides, every Droid 1 who got the phone subsidized is still on contract for another year.

Search for "MyLock" in the market. Can't vouch for docking, but it does get rid of the need to slide to unlock the phone. Phone wakes with the power button or by sliding open the keyboard.

edit: Using Carhome app and Mylock, you don't seem to need to slide to unlock.

Why do we need more powerful computers? I can check my e-mail and stock quotes on a Pentium II.

Thats a dumb question, Why do we want to progress technologically?

I believe sometime in the future the desktop as we know it will no longer exist. When? who knows.

If you can't answer that, then stick to whatever phone you currently have, its evidently adequate for your needs. Others have different needs and desires.
