I bought the 4200 and it works well so far. The subcontract technician of ATTBI said 4200 is supported (not on the list as we said). Seems to me that in case you have problems they would have an excuse. Otherwise, it would work perfectly fine o rin the same way.

On the other hand, I called in once asking for supported modems. The answer was :"as long as it is DOCSIS compatible".

Can anyone give me some advice as to how to test modem performance?

Thanks,</FONT>

Do not uncap your modem (via configuration file change) under attbi's network. The network will see the changed configuration and it will block your acct and you will not get your internet back.

I can vouch that is true for the 12.x.x.x network as I do tier 1 support for it.

also, the sb4200 is not on the approved modem list. It is docsis compliant and will most likely work but at&t will not guarantee that it will work.

To test (cable / high speed) modem performance:

DSLReports Speed Test
The East Coast test site (NAC.NET) is only available for *free* at low demand times.
AFAIR, late, late evening (early morning - 1 AM?) to, say, 10 AM or so.

Also agree - some ATT say any DOCSIS, other say it's gotta' be on the list.
3Com *Office* connect (3CR29210) is *not* on the list, and does *not* work, at least on some segments of ATTBI.
Whereas 3CR29220 - Home Connect - does work!
Sucks.
YMMV

A little bird told me disabling SNMP might just make you less vulnerable to having your uncapped modem detected especially on att networks. However I do agree with not uncapping I paid for and receive 1.5 download speeds.. I'm really happy with that. Uncapping steals bandwidth from those other folks using that same cable to their houses. a theif is a theif no matter how you try to justify it.
if you took me from 1.5 to 768 I'd be throwin a sh!t fit :(

I'd love to have higher speed.

And I think most of the bean counters are incredibly short sighted.
As foolish as ATT (long ago) when they initially tried to hold modems to *** 300 *** baud!
(Their incredibly mis-guided attempt to keep revenue from long distance maximized).

But what if users *start* altering the firmware of cable modems?

I fear the shared access could be exposed to serious and very real disruptions.

Not at first.
But what script kiddie hacker wouldn't just delight in taking down pieces of somebody's cable network?

A branch of the cable network YOU'RE ON ! ?
Or maybe just disabling YOUR cable modem ?
Ha ha.

Wouldn't it be trivial for cable systems to offer Trojan horse firmware at sites that look like hacker stuff?
That phones home and tattle tales?
In league with law enforcement - say, the FBI?
Waiting 'til a couple of thousand poor souls take the bait before pulling the plug on the "sting"?
And then the inevitable legal action (court?, lawyers?, fines?, jail for the "core terrorists"?) ?

Thanks, but no thanks!

as the guy who kills your account when you uncap, I can tell you the process is a tad more extensive then the network detecting the modified config file and autokilling your account. its a selective choice, as sometime modems fail to check in, or transmit incorrect data, you are monitored when your modem does not check in with bandwidth usage monitors if you consistantly use over your cap speed then its sent to the what I refer to as security round table, basicly we all sit around and figure out what exactly to do, sometimes we can resend the file, sometimes not. but that is when the kill decision is made. bottem line, don't uncap.

*** News Flash ***

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Yahoo news article

The article says ATTBI is raising the monthly rate on cable modem owners by $7 - from $35.95 to $42.95.
The monthly modem rental fee is being reduced from $10 to $3.
Thus, current renters monthly total fee stays the same - $45.95

Just shot to hell the payback period.
Instead of under 1 year, now about 3 years.

Say bye bye to interest in CM hot deals from ATTBI customers.

Ya' pays yer' money and ya' takes yer' chances.

I would like to thank marill999 for this post. I've been wanting to buy my own cable modem and this is just what I needed. I received mine today and called Comcast (Michigan) to provision my cable modem. Gave them S/N, MAC address, Model Number and they said it won't be a problem at all.
[edit] I bought the SB4200 model [/edit]
