Do you have a link to the rebate on the SB4200? I'd like to trust compuplus, but the motorola site only has the rebate for the 4100 listed.

I just had a frustrating chat with AT&T support.

The Motorola SB4200 is not on AT&T's approved list.
The rep insisted that use of approved modems was not just suggested, but required. However the
forum link given by marill999 above seems to indicate some problems with the (more expensive, and poorer performing) SB4100 which it is apparently replacing.

Anybody know anything regarding AT&T's approved list being suggested or required equipment?

UPDATE:
New ATTBI list - SB4200 now *** APPROVED ***
Good news!
Since this original post, ATTBI has added SB4200 !!!

Congrats!
The bad news - the price differential is now only $3/month, as of July 2002

ATTBI's approved cable modem list

I, too, think the SB4200 ought to work.
But then again, *some* people could never get the unapproved 3Com 3CR29210(?) Office Connect cable modem to work, even though the 3CR29220 Home Connect model is approved and does work (I use it).

I did "chat" with CS, they provided the URL for an email, which I did.

Haven't heard back, yet.

More inquires wouldn't hurt, would they? :)

I believe CC is selling the SB4100 modem with a $80 rebate if you signup for broadband with them, which is possibly stackable with the $30 rebate!

Yup. You should start seeing the 4200s trickle in to B&Ms now. I was just at CC the other day and they had both 4100s and 4200s.

ATTBI "dispute" resolution email response to query as to SB4200 approval time frame:
"Thank you for writing.

Unfortunately we do not have a time frame as to when this modem will be added to our approved modem list. Please check this site again for further updates.

I got a call from AT&T this morning saying that the modem isn't supported under their supported modem list so they want me to send the modem back to where I bought from and use back the old SB4100. It is working perfectly with my SB4200 though

Any of you guys facing the same problem?

How does att know which model you're using? will they not hook up a home with the 4200?

FWIW: I had the same problem with Cox@home when the 4100s came out. I just said: sorry, my bad, I meant I have a 3100 and they set me right up. That was almost a year ago. No problems at all.

Before you even use your modem, you need to register your new modem with AT&T which you may be charged about $9. They will take your MAC address and serial number. This means, they would also be able to cap your speed.

erm, yeah, of course they would cap you when you set it up.

but with the 4100 you can change the cap the cable company instills. just wondering if this is possible with the 4200 also. and it isn't recommended that you uncap, good chance your company will catch you and give you a warning and eventual kill your account if you do it a few times.

i've uncapped my rented 4100 once, went from my crappy 768/128 to 1500/384 for a few days before it got reset back. it's not worth the risk, so back to paying ~60 for my crap speeds. heh. :)

when the modem connects to the cable company, it loads up a config/setup file from the provider that sets the cap. everytime you restart the modem it does this. to uncap, you would somehow have your modem load a different file from a different location. :)

that's all i'm saying. heh

Just got my SB4200.. By the way, Compuplus ships the same day.. So I ordered on Thursday morning, 2 day air, and it arrived on Friday 1PM. Anyway, 2 points:

1. Great modem, and it works with ATTBI (even though it's not on the approved list yet). Great vendor too, I've ordered from Compuplus more than once now.

2. DON'T UNCAP YOUR F'IN MODEM! There should really be some moral motivation not to steal service you didn't pay for.. bandwidth costs money per byte, and you agreed to that cap when you paid your flat fee. The bandwidth you are stealing is being paid for by your honest neighbors. If you are still unconvinced by your conscience, you should be convinced by consequences: They will probably shut off your service for running an uncapped modem. I know that my provider, ATTBI, can detect uncapped modems, and they shut you off with zero warning.

So Rhobite, are you sure this will work with ATTBI? Cause I plan on signing up this summer in the Bay Area. So what's with this basic installation? Is it easy to install? Cause I'm going to buy the cable modem and I already have a NIC. I also plan on buying a cable/DSL router to home network my house. Care to give any insight? Thanks.
