Motorola SLVR L7....anybody using it, what do you think?

I'm wanting to upgrade my crappy Motorola V180 with a new SLVR L7 phone. Anybody here using one, and if so what do you think about it?

Had a L7 but too damn small for me ,other than that just another razr spin off ...

I still have my razr though ...😉

EDIT: lonyo everythime I hear a responce like that it comes from a person who never even owned one but just like to raise that post count ....you big stud ...

i had it for a few days right after it came out and returned it, i didnt like it.

My reasons:
1. Very slow when using iTunes. It would sometimes take 2-3 seconds after a button press to respond.
2. I could not STAND how bland and unintuitive the Moto user interface is.
3. WAY to fingerprint sensitive for a cell phone.
4. #'s were too small to press without hitting other ones. Also, because of the layout, you can't press them w/o looking at them.

i'm using it since April... it's my first cellphone and i'm happy with it. It's small with a nice design, USB, bluetooth, mp3 and mine came with 512mo memory and headset.

+Nice look
+Cool connectivity
+Good sound
+Speaker for useful handfree talks
+mp3 ringtones

-Limited calendar
-Keypad for small fingers
-You'll want to find another mp3 player

It's a "fun" cellphone... i'll upgrade before the end of the year for a more "fun business phone" (SE w950i)

It's basically the same problems as the Razr, but also add the problems of the Rokr.

Size comparison of MY Sony Ericsson K700 with a Motorola L7 (SLVR).
I can take another pic and add "ATOT" to it if you want?

I will paste what I sent someone in PM.

I honestly found it less user friendly than my K700.
For starters the signal seemed quite bad (compared to the K700), it wouldn't recieve signal where my K700 would.
In terms of ease of use, it didn't have any compared to the K700. Simple things like deleting a text message required about 4 or 5 key presses, compared to 2 on the K700, and when the SLVR has a slightly laggy menu, it can be annoying.
In terms of size, it may be thin, but it's actually quite large in the other dimensions.
The screen, while it could be nice, doesn't show up that well in power save mode, and takes a bit longer to come on when you press keys than the K700, which maybe only be a second or two lost, but it's annoying, and makes it a chore if you want to use it to tell the time.

The phone itself doesn't feel as robust as my K700 did, but that could partly be to do with its dimensions, and more a it "felt" more fragile than actually being fragile, if you know what I mean. I didn't try dropping it
It also holds finger marks and smudges well, so it looks dirty (I have the silver version).

Other issues which may have been me:
It did not retain predictive text settings, so every time I wrote a new text mesage I had to set it from default onto predictive text mode.
It would not automatically lock the keys, I had to manually lock them so they would not get accidentally pressed, and despite looking in the manual and phone options, I was unable to turn on an automatic lock.
It would rarely/almost never give me a message sent/delivery confirmation on text messages, even when the setting was enabled.

For a size comparison. SLVR L7 vs Sony Ericsson K700

IMO it's not a very cute phone, considering its size. Cute would be small, it is not very small, just thin.

got it after i put my razr through the laundry

i have the 1gb transcend card in it. came with a bluetooth headset also -- got the whole package on ebay for 190 shipped, which is a steal.

pros:
looks terrific (slim, big vivid screen), uses the razr interface for the most part (easy to use), does pretty much everything it claims to do, camera is a huge improvement over the razr's, the new hardened glass is a great plus (doesn't scratch easily, much more viewable in daylight than that crappy plastic the previous v-generations and the razr suffered from). once newer firmware/bootloader comes out, it'll be just as moddable as the razr was. which would give it +1 zillion points in my book.

cons:
uses the razr interface for the most part (no upgrade, at all basically), but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. as digitalme said: the calendar sucks, keypad will take some getting used to. vibrate feature (after coming off the razr's pretty strong gyroscope) is pretty wimpy, but you'll get used to it also. if you get an unlocked version off ebay, you'll definitely need to do some research to get it working on your network.

overall, i like it -- but i'll be upgrading before the end of the year. lifespan of interest to me < 12 months.

no offense, but i wouldn't even call the k700 a comparable phone to the l7.

it's too thick to be considered even in the same class, not to mention ericsson's styling <<< moto's. I have actually toyed around with the k700 a few times, but would never consider purchasing one for myself. imo most people purchasing the l7 are searching specifically for a very good-looking, sleek phone -- and in that area, the l7 is heads, shoulders, and heads again above the ericsson.

It's what I had to compare it to. And I would say the SLVR is as boring as a lot of other phones.
So, it's slim, but it's big in terms of width and heigh, which isn't so great.
It's just IMO quite a boring phone. IMO the K700 looks better, in a kind of "cute" way while the SLVR is more of an industrial, stainless steel kitchen kind of thing.

Lonyo, to address your quote:

if you're talking default options out of the box, then perhaps you're right about the k700 being more user friendly than the moto. but i'd say a lot of the issues you are taking with the phone are simple fixes- ones that i myself have performed, or ones that i've never experienced.

text messages always came with an alert, even out of the box.
predictive text? you can set those settings through the menu key, for each individual field (text messages, phone book, etc) that might require text to be inputted.
backlight coming up when button's pressed? - never experienced this, it lights immediately on contact
key locking? - well, maybe it'd be easier if keys automatically locked after sitting idle for a period of time, but i personally know i'd disable this feature. i wouldn't want my phone sitting next to me while i was on the computer or something locking up and having me manually disable it when i picked it up. plus, that "menu + *" combination is a long way from being tedious.
laggy menu - this is true, the razr suffered from this as well. but for me, i simply did a quick firmware flash, just as i did with my razr, and now i've had no problems at all with the speed of the menu. also, the nice little battery life enhancement that came with the flash is definitely a commendable upgrade.

the one concern of yours that i do completely agree with is signal strength. compared to the razr, the slvr is simply lacking. hell compared to most phones, it simply doesn't pick up signals or even hold on to them nearly as well. but for me this hasn't been a problem, since i'm in areas heavily covered by my carrier. but if you're used to getting a bar or two even in heavy commercial areas, or within a building, you might be in a for a bit of a surprise.

and you're right, the slvr isn't a fantastic, overwhelmingly fun phone that someone will fall in love with right out of the box. but it's definitely a good phone to hold someone keen on style over for at least the better portion of a year. and for people who would willingly drop 200 on ebay, 300 with a carrier on that phone simply because of the way it looks on advertisements on billboards or posters -- it probably won't disappoint in that field.

... so not terrible, not fantastic, not terribly inept, not incredibly capable -- just a good looking motorola phone, remarkably similar to the razr (which in this instance could be considered a deficit, seeing how it came out a good 18 months later - you'd hope moto could introduce a significant upgrade by then). 7.5 out of 10 from me.

See sig.

Besides that, I'm not a fan of Motorola's interface and there are several other complaints I have which others have already mentioned.

I've had one for maybe 4 months. I like it because it's nice and slim, has decent connectivity (bluetooth, etc), can take memory cards, has decent battery life and good volume. It's a basic phone with a basic camera, but this is exactly what I was looking for.

My only gripe is the software interface which is cluttered and kind of immature. I don't think it's possible to download different ones, but I'd be very happy to be proven wrong on this point.

I say get one overall. I'd give the whole package maybe 8/10.

I used to have a v180 just like you, upgraded to the SLVR because I didn't want to buy an ipod. Take it to the gym and listen to it while I work out, its great. Have not had one problem with it the whole time I've had it.

I have this phone and i like it. I put a 1gb card in there and its great for watching family guy ep or nething else. Overall i like this phone havent had any major problems
