Motorola SB6120 Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem

Not sure if any of the ISPs give you a discount on owning your own modem for D3 service. I know Comcast doesn't, so in the end buying this modem just puts you $100 in the hole when a modem is already provided, and paid for by your subscription. Otherwise this is a 'decent' price on the modem and it's backward compatible so long as your ISP wants it to be.

most cable companies that i've had experience with charge a monthly fee for modem rental, varying from $3-$5/month.

AFAIK they do not extend this to 22/5 or 50/10 D3 customers. But assuming $3/mo means it'll be 3 years before the modem pays for itself anyway.
 
Also, for D3 service from Comcast they PROVIDE the cable-modem.

So again, you're $100 in the hole...also, any problems you have they'll want you to use their modem....

Speaking of which, is this Motorola SB6120 on thier supported D3 modem list?

Right, that's what I've been trying to say. And yes, it is on their supported list for all DOCSIS specs...they initially rolled out SB6100s, but are now using SB6120s with full upstream channel bonding.
 
I was just at an OD and they have the Linksys cable modem that I have been using for a couple of years now with Insight for $49.

Same here in Central Cali. Comcast tops out @ 16/2 in my area. My Linksks BEFCMU10 V4 is going out on me, so I figured I might as well future-proof myself in case we ever do get DOCSIS 3 here. I have owned my own modem for over 5 years now, so I'm not too worried about it paying for itself.

It's actually quite nice...It's not as obvious as the SB51XX modems in a household setting. It's smaller and mine runs much cooler than the SB5100 it replaced.

Yes, the SB5100 is a Docsis 2.0 modem. The SB6120 is a Docsis 3.0, and can handle the faster 3.0 speeds. Whether you need the SB6120 depends on your cable company. Comcast has already started deploying Docsis 3.0. I was told that the best my current 2.0 will get is 15mbps, and if I wanted the faster speeds that will be availible within the next month, I would have to get a 3.0 modem. They will offer 50mbps download package, if you've got the $142.95 a month.

 
DOCSIS 2.0's max theoretical download is around 38mbps down and 27mbps up using QAM256 both ways. However virtually no cable broadband services us QAM256 on the return path because it would require a lot better infrastructure. QAM64 is typical, and the maximum throughput from that type of modulation at the standard channel widths is ~11mbps.

Ahhh thanks for the info 🙂 I guess in my case it's not worth it then. I'm currently signed up for the 16mbps down plan but only cause im getting it for 19.99/month for 6 months. After this promotion expires, I'm probably going to downgrade to the lowest/cheapest plan they have.

Yep with comcast and I'm not sure what the reg price is to be honest. I signed up back in January and asked for the cheapest plan and the person on the phone told me about this 6 month special.

Maybe it's a regional thing. But yeah, 59.99 is way too high for me :/ I have to find out what their cheapest plan is. I'm good up until July.
 
with my 50/10 service they gave us this modem...and in a few years when it's bad (since the technology is still relatively new) they can give us something new...we do pay 2.99$ extra to 'rent' it...but if it breaks, they swap it out no charge.
