Two places you can get this modem fairly cheap. If you want to avoid state tax (~$8.00) purchase from the store that isn't in your state. The $30 Rebate is for SB3100, SB4100, and SB4200 models. I haven't seen anyplace selling the SB4200 yet. As you can see below shipping makes the prices from these two online stores almost identical. Reseller rating for Comp-U-Plus is 7.58 and Newegg is 9.37.

Examples of shipping

Comp-U-Plus (NY) - $98.00 + $14.95 S/H (UPS ground to AZ) = $112.95 (before MIR)

Newegg (CA) - $106.00 + $7.00 S/H (3day Air) = $113.00 (before MIR)

Some people in another thread said that they found the modem at Best Buy for $99 with NO rebates.. Bringing the final cost down to $69.

I was at BB B&M yesterday and I remember they had them for $99 after rebates though. YMMV.

I recently got one of these 3Com 3CR29210 modems for my AT&T broadband connection (Seattle, WA) and it works flawlessly.

Install drivers, connect modem (USB or ethernet) - got a connection within 2 minutes, registered it online:-

ATT Register PC/Modem

Cruising along at exactly the same throughput as before. Breakeven within 3-4 months or less - plus you can always sell the modem later if you no longer need it.

Does anybody know a good HYBRID cable modem for one way connections? I'm looking at getting a wireless Linksys cable router/switch and one-way cable modem service.

My cable company uses the SB4100D now, and I can't find this modem *ANYWHERE* for sale.. (The D is Dual line. Like the 3100d modems of Motorla/General Instruments)

Help!

<< why don't get the 3com cable modem for $20 AR. I don't think there is big different performance. >>

One reason is my provider doesn't support it (because it's discontinued) and therefore will not provision it. Also it's not DOCSIS 1.1 upgradable. I like 3com and would buy it if this wasn't the case.

Also the only difference between the SB4100 and SB4200 is the lights on the front panel and the location standby switch, I think they have the same processor. The SB3100, SB4100, and SB4200 are all DOCSIS 1.1 upgradable.

I have been doing searches on pricewatch and pricegrabber for the 4200 for a couple months now, guess they just popped up. :) Also that Sybercom is in CA so shipping here to AZ would probably be a little cheaper. Thanks for the headsup.

Eric G. there is a guy on EBay selling an SB3100D for $50, but his buy now price is insane at $150. It doesn't look like there is a reserve though. Ebay SB3100D, $50.

One difference is the Ethernet side is 10/100, which might only be an advantage if you cable modem was uncapped or you have high caps like Optimum Online in which you could reach the threashold of the 10Mbit side. Also I believe the processor in the SB4100 is faster than the SB3100 and the SB4100 has a standby button. The SB4100 uses the Broadcom BCM3350 which is a MIPS-32 80 MHz R3000 processor. The SB3100 uses the Broadcom BCM3300, I can't find processor specs though. The SB4200 uses the Broadcom BCM3345, don't ask me why it uses a lower model then the SB4100 but it does say it has 2x Cable Modem performance over competing cable modem IC's.

i have a Motorola 4101 Surfboard for sale. I'll let it go for $100 shipped. i bought this a couple of weeks ago so its still pretty much brand new. i installed it and for some reason it cant find the right ip adress!? my cable company uses this model for the higher speed users. if anybody is interested or has a 4100 surfboard to trade then email me at getlifted420@juno.com . what would be even better is if someone can help me with the reason why it cant find the right ip address. all the lights light up but the online one blinks. i check the configuration and the ip address is way off from that of the 4100. i used the telnet and ipconfig commands etc. and no success! anybody can help me? or interested to trade or buying it?

FWIW:

ATTBI Approved cable modem list

Motorola (formerly General Instrument)
SB2100
SB3100
SB4100

SB4200 isn't, at this moment in time, on the "official" approved list.

Some users have trouble w/CM not on the list.
Others don't have any trouble.

Take care. YMMV!
Seems different regions / segments make all the difference.
Check w/local provider to verify if it *should* work for you.
