I am wondering if for sure I can hook this phone up to my laptop, "dial in" and get online where ever there is a signal. I have bluetooth on my IBM Thinkpad T42.

Yes you can, but it is very expensive. AT&T/Cingular charge about $80 a month for unlimited data use. In order to maximise your utility I recommend a phone with EDGE capability the two phones that currently have EDGE are Nokia 6630 which can do ~ 140kbps and the Nokia 6230 which do around ~230kbps both speeds are theoretical best case speeds. Regular GPRS (which what the Moto offers you) will give you a theretical max of 56kbps.

Does Cingular castrate the bluetooth capabilities like on the Verizon V710?

You're kidding, Verizon takes the only Bluetooth phone they have and castrates Bluetooth? Are they stupid or something?

I'm pretty sure Cingular didn't do anything to the bluetooth.

This is why I will never switch to Verizon - they are just too greedy/narrowminded. Yes, their coverage is commendable and even their high speed data network is pretty good, but this kind of crippling phones is ridiculous. I don't expect that Cingular would ever do a thing like that. I know that AT&T does not do anything of the like for a fact. Syncing number and transfering photos are two biggest things I do with Bluetooth. I remember once when I had the Moto V600 I had to connect to my computer using DUN in order to connect my laptop (using the BVRP Motorola Phone Tools Software) to the phone. It was a pain. I don't even remember how I did it anymore as I got rid of that ridiculous phone and got a decent Nokia, but someone posted how to do it on howardforums.

You can do it for less: Get the MEdia Works package for $19.99 a month. That gets you 1500 txt messages per month plus unlimited Wireless Internet Express, which is data. It's made for retreiving data with your phone's browser, but I've used it for laptop access. If you get it, I'd add it after you have service setup by calling up and talking to a rep and making sure you get unlimited data. I will say that for the few days that I used this for data access, I *was* charged an insane amount for data services, but when I called to fix it, I got the impression that it was because "someone forgot to turn on unlimited data". You might want to activate it, test it out for a day (which will give you an idea of the data speed anyway), cancel it and see if any data charges are added to your account beyond the cost of the 1 day, which is prorated (you'll get charged $19.99 on your next statement, then credited $19 and some change on the following statement).

Anyway, it worked for me, but try it at your own risk.

I've been saying this for weeks:

ALL HAIL THE NEW V60!

Remember when the V60 came out and everyone thought it was a great phone? People bought them for around $400, then after a year they became free for new users. Fast foward another 6 months, everyone had one and loved pressing the up and down buttons to make it chirp.

I don't understand, why is this phone so expensive? The Moto v710 trumps this phone on features, seems like to me. Is it because it's GSM, vs. the 710, which is a trimode?

Whats not to understand?

Its a new product, adtervisement spending went into the hundreds of millions. New sleek design. "aluminum" Thin, pretty, etc.

This is more than enough to get many people spending 400 bucks.

A friend of mine has it, I used it, its nothing special. Personally I have a lot more important things to spend 400 dollars on. He only paid 50 so it was worth it to him.

I just wish that Amazon and other online wireless carrier sales sites would fix their ordering sections. According to Amazon, Wirefly, and others, I am still in AT&T Wireless area. Cingular merged with AT&T and AT&T plans are no longer being offered. In short, I can't order this phone from any online provider, which sucks.

i see ads from the phone shops in Oakland chinatown where they're giving cash back to buy this phone. i'll be buying one this january. the shop that i bought my current phone from has a sign out where its $159. the people there told me they can sell it for t-mobile as well. i think the phone comes unlocked.

it's so expensive because it's so thin i'm sure. i got a new phone a month ago and this thing was like 500 bucks in-store...i don't think i'd ever want a phone that expensive.

Such an expensive phone and it doesn't even have any features different than the free V220, same camera, options. Screen is pretty nice though, its 2005 and this is the best we have? I need to move to Nippon 😀 I'm probably going to return it and get a SX66 with BT, WiFi, voice command, 320x480 screen when the store gets them in, thats at least sorta worth $500.
