We know there are users out there who have been asking for an unlockable bootloader on their Motorola Mobility device. For quite some time now, we’ve been working closely with our carrier partners to find a way to make that possible — all while keeping the networks secure and protecting other users’ experiences. We’re excited to announce that Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE, just announced today and coming soon to Sprint’s fast 4G LTE network, will have an unlockable bootloader. We’ll share more details on how to take advantage of this feature closer to availability. And moving forward, we’ll be looking to offer this option on other devices as well.

I'm pretty much going to give credit for this move to Google, and the house cleaning the appointed MotoMobile CEO did when he took the reigns.

Oh, and you'll not see unlockable bootloaders on Verizon devices, I'm guessing.

That and the "moving forward" part are annoying. Bought something already? Too bad! Buying it on Verizon (and 50/50 coin toss on the schizo AT&T)? Too bad! :hmm:

Moto: "We found a way!"

... six months later, new Moto phone on Verizon.
Disgruntled customers: "Hey, I thought you said...?"
Moto: "Verizon's a bunch of a$$hats. Sorry."
Complaints to Verizon: "Hey, we want unlocked bootloaders!"
Verizon: "That's entirely in the hands of the manufacturers..."
Customers: "now wtf is this crap?"
Moto: " ... no comment."

Regardless of how this shakes out in the end, I'm still worried about the whole Nexus program and Verizon's "participation."

As long as the phone is of high quality, I'd love to continue buying Nexus phones that work on Verizon's network. I've always been annoyed by VZW's methods, but I have always liked their service, coverage, and customer support - at least for how I've had to interact with them.

Found a way to unlock their own devices. The ones they designed and manufacture.

Wow.

They deserve some kind of credit for this?

The cynic in me is thinking "oh they are allowing an unlocked bootloader by creating a different 'lock' that does the same thing just harder to crack and doesn't deal with the bootloader"

still wouldn't buy moto. generally if you have to unlock the bootloader then your warranty is void. i'll take one that's already unlocked like samsung.

Screw that.
I'll believe it when I see it.
That's the same rubbish nonsense they said last summer about unlocking bootloaders where operators allow.

If they want to prove it, they should make their next Verizon DROID phone to have unlockable/unencrypted bootloaders.

Google owns Motorola. Nexus phones have unlockable /unlocked bootloaders. Stands to reason the next Nexus will be a Motorola.

Google owns Motorola Mobility, not Motorola. There will be at least 5 Nexus devices for Key Lime Pie, only one or two of which could be Motos.
