Today, we confirmed that the leaked early builds of Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) for the Motorola Atrix 4G will, in fact, allow users to unlock their bootloaders using the traditional command: “fastboot oem unlock.” Once users receive the over-the-air update in July, they’ll be able to boot their Atrix 4G into Fastboot mode and unlock from there.
Nicely done, Moto. Gingerbread+unlocked bootloader.

EDIT: Droid-life is a bit skeptical. http://www.droid-life.com/2011/06/2...x-4g-bootloader-when-it-receives-gingerbread/

Always liked the atrix, it seems to be the smallest 4" smartphone out there, but it packs a dual core cpu, qhd screen and 1gb of ram. I'll probably pick up a used one once the bootloader becomes unlocked.

and I might win the lottery, gotta love how people hear about a big maybe and get so overjoyed. This is Motorola we're talking about, so as lothar said "I wouldn't hold my breath"

Exactly what is the point of unlocking the bootloader in the days of the 2nd init hack.

I was under the impression that the 2nd init hack basically gets rid of 99% of the issues that a locked bootloader gives, which is why it was possible to port Cyanogen to the Dx.

look how long it took to get 2nd init though?

it allows custom roms but you cant get custom kernels still. we've been having roms via 2nd init on the Milestone for some time now. it's still problematic. the bigger issue is the drivers that Moto uses.

think about those awesome custom kernels like on the SGS phones. BLN? Voodoo control? etc etc. Also think of other HTC kernels where they got 2 way call recording in there. I'd kill for those features.

Bootloader has been unlocked on current and future builds. Kenneth Pennington has a leaked RC build for Gingerbread and he confirmed that the bootloader unlock works on it. Even if Moto/ATT fuck this up we have the other RC build of Gingerbread.

I'd say it's only 50% of the problems, 2nd init isn't as good as you make it out to be, you're still using the stock kernel with 2nd init you're just loading a custom rom. A lot of improvements are made in custom kernels so phones with just 2nd init miss out on a lot of enhancements that can be made.

This sucks as I just sold my Atrix 2 weeks ago, would've kept it if they had this I'm thinking about getting another one now...

I like my Atrix now the way it is since Motoblur doesn't bother me really since I'm a business user mostly, and am happy to see that I'm going to be liking it much more in the future.

Does anybody really use their phone like that? Lol...... seems pretty neurotic to me the way he tests it. Anyway, looks pretty smooth to me. Look forward to it....
