WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A motorist who allegedly hit and killed a 3-year-old boy was pulled from his car and beaten by a group of men who saw the crash, sheriff's officials said.
Honorio Martinez, 37, was charged with felony driving without a license that resulted in a death, Palm Beach County sheriff's officials said.

The boy, Armant Williams, darted into traffic late Saturday and was struck by Martinez' car on a rural West Palm Beach road, sheriff's spokesman Paul Miller said.
More than a dozen men, friends of the boy's father, saw the crash and stopped the car about a half-block away, Miller said.

The men dragged Martinez, 37, out of the driver's seat and punched him several times, Miller said.
After the beating, Martinez walked back to see how the child was doing, then said he was leaving because he didn't have a driver's license, Miller said.

The men pounced on him again, then scattered when deputies arrived, Miller said.

Martinez was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. The Border Patrol asked that he remain jailed even if he posts bail because he did not have immigration documents, Miller said.

A lawyer from the Palm Beach County public defender's office was assigned to him, officials said. No one there answered calls seeking comment Sunday.

No one has been charged in the beating of Martinez.

Granted, if he didn't have a license then he shouldn't have been on the road, but that still doesn't make it his fault. The kid doesn't know who has a license or who doesn't, then decides which cars to dart out in front of based on who is properly permitted.

If he was fleeing the scene of the accident they never would've been able to beat him. The boy darted out in front of traffic. Licence or not, the boy would've died. The man driving was stupid, as was the men who beat him.

Save for the fact that the idiot was driving without a license, in all probability it is not his fault for hitting the kid. No question, however, that he deserved a serious beatdown for trying to evade his responsibility of being a decent human being.

Nobody has caught this fact yet:

The Border Patrol asked that he remain jailed even if he posts bail because he did not have immigration documents, Miller said.

He is in the is country illegally (surprise!) and he HAS NO RIGHTS AT ALL. Shoot his ass. Better, let him loose in the neighborhood where he killed the kid...let them know he's coming.

I am sure the kid darted out and there was no way anyone could've stopped. What's done is done. But this guys' another illegal alien. No right.s

Being an illegal alien, he doesn't have the rights of a citizen, certainly. But the rights we have in our country are based on the idea that ALL men (if you want to be technical about language) have certain inalienable rights. He may not be legally guarenteed rights, but as a human being, if we're true to our founding, he does have rights.

He was already a half a block away when the other men stopped him.
Where would he be going after he just hit a little boy? Shouldn't he have stopped immediately?

Historically, you're correct. But I respectfully disagree w/you in this case.

We are no longer in the "good old days of immigration" i.e. late 1800s/early 1900s. In this modern day and age, the legal immigration process is well known. And not to "go there" but every single immigration document this country produces is in English and Spanish.

Mr. Martinez knew damn well he was here illegally. That's why he didn't have a license.

It's too bad the boy is dead, but this is just another "illegal immigrant gets busted" story.

250 years doesn't negate the declaration of independence, constitution, and the bill of rights.. the guy still has the legal right to not be assaulted.

No, no he doesn't. If he doesn't have the respect for the country he is illegally living in to go through the process and become a legal citizen, and get a proper and legal license, then he has no legal rights as far as I'm concerned. The door swings both ways. If you want to be protected by our laws, then live by them. Otherwise you can go fvck yourself.

I can't argue for his legal rights, since he was here illegally and violating other laws. Human rights I can speak to, because I don't believe they change.

eh, i fail to see jumping from "this guy has no rights" to "lets shoot him or beat him". i mean, you could kill or beat him, but then you should be arrested for either murder or assault, respectively.

NO, he does not!!! He 's not a citizen of this country, ergo our laws and rights do not apply to him.

We're talking legally here, not morally or anything "fuzzy" like that. Try going down to Mexico, breaking the law, then telling the local police "I have rights!" See what happens.
