Motorcycles: Recreational vehicles or mode of transportation?

Asharus

My friend just got his motorcycle license, and is totally psyched to start riding. He doesn't need it for transportation, since he's got an SUV for a daily driver. I predict that he will get bored of it in a month or two.

IMO, it looks like fun, but is not worth the risk. After reading that post about the guy who cracked his head open, it scares me even more. I'm picturing my friend, dead in the street.

What say you, ATOT? Are motorcycles built for fun, or mainly for transportation?

both. Mostly for fun, but they have a lot of advantages as a daily driver....easy to park, cheap to insure, really good mileage...

Jeez a Busa for a commuter thats overkill 😉

They're great at both Asharus, but most riders ride for the fun it has to be said (thats probably why most of us get into biking in the first place). Bikes have great advantages for the commute though as Jagec said, you need to add Both to the poll 😉

just out of curiosity... what miles per gallon do you guys get on your bikes?

I get about 45 to the gallon out of mine (UK miles which I think are longer than US miles) but I ride mine pretty hard 🙂

wait til he gets one of those "sh*t in your pants" moments... it wont be so fun anymore... 😀

ive had my license for a couple of years now and still havent bought my own bike since i just dont trust the drivers in this city... maybe when I finish school... 😀

sweet! i really wanna get a yamaha yzf600R or R1.. of course, that'll be about 4-6 years down the road... unless i hit the lottery on my 18th birthday 🙂

I get my R1 on Wednesday 🙂 can't wait

Your laws must be different than ours you can't ride anything over a 250cc 33bhp bike (I think) until you're 21 which imo is a good thing, too little experience + powerful bike = DEAD

mnementh, promise me you'll take it to a 1/4 mile speedway 😛 i can't imagine how quick an R1 must be with ~2:1 weight/horsepower ratio!

edit: what's a squid alert?

Heh don't think we have those over here, the only thing like that I've heard of is Bruntingthorpe proving grounds which is a 2 mile disused runway. I'm gonna take some time to get used to it before I try anything like that, it's a big step up from my GSX-R 600 🙂

As soon as I'm used to it (and had some crash protectors fitted 😉 ) I'm gonna take it to Thruxton for a track day I'll let you know how that goes 🙂

I ride for both recration and cummute. I have a CBR F4. though i have thought about selling it next summer.

In my opinion, if you're getting into the sport and being afraid of it from the get go, you're getting into it for entirely the wrong reasons.
It's for enjoyment/recreation as well as transportation, but you have to be 5 times more alert and aware on a bike than you are when you're tooling around in your car. The rewards are more than you could imagine if you've never ridden, but being scared out there is just going to make you more unsafe than the opposite.
In the summer months, my bike is my only licensed vehicle(the wife has a car). It's just too bad I'm more to the transportation side of the spectrum since our roads up here are so straight and poorly maintained. 🙁

Tell your buddy to take a training course if he's never ridden, there's NO WAY he'll get bored of it. Trust us. 🙂

Thats probably the best reply so far...

Wheres the option for both.

Thats like saying do you drive a corvette for Transportation or fun. It, like a bike, can be for both.

Not everybody drives a boreing Toyota Camry, some of use like to enjoy life 😉

to people getting their first bikes:

Please don't get anything too big. It's rather frightening that a 16 year old can take a paper test and go ride any bike they want in the US. Fenixgoon - an R1 is WAAAYYY too much bike for a first bike. Hell, the R6 is too much.

Tru dat, any race replica is too much really, if a new rider wants a sporty bike they should get a sports tourer to get used to it first...

Hmm...how about recreational transportation? 🙂

I don't have a car at the moment, so my only means of transportation is either my bike...or a borrowed car if I can find one. While riding in the rain sucks, I still wouldn't ever get rid of this thing. Hell, if I go more than two or three days without taking it out, I start to crave the feeling to the point where I have to at least go run just to get some gas or something.

It's an unreal experience, but one that comes with a lot of responsibility on your part. If you hit something, you're most likely only going to end up killing yourself...so yes, you definitely have to be alert at all times. And even then, there's no guarantee someone won't just rearend you at a stoplight.

Oh, and to someone that asked earlier: a "squid" is a derogatory term for any rider that fails to safely operate their bike. Usually reserved for those that don't wear protective gear, want the biggest/fastest bike solely for the "wow" factor, and want to try and learn how to wheelie before they know what countersteer is. "Crotch rocket" is the term used to designate a sportbike, not "squid."

Mnementh, you're in the UK right?
Can you explain something to me? What's the deal with those little pinkish tags you have to purchase? I forget what they're called. I'm under the understanding that you have to buy not only your license(plates) but also something else and have both stickers on all the time.
And by the way, I REALLY like how you guys license new riders over there! Wish we had that here.
