Motorcycle?

I've been considering getting a motorcycle for some time now, but I have no idea where to start looking.

I'm looking for a decent Sport model for under 5000$ CAD.

Anyone have any ideas?

...do you actually know how to ride one?

And you are asking ATOT😕

There are plenty of motorcycle forums out there with more motorcycle knowledge than here.

My mistake, I had forgotten that everyone but me was born with the ability to ride a motorcycle.

Just asking... I seem to remember quite a few other threads where people posted for advice on buying a sport bike who had never gotten on a motorcycle before. Was wondering if you fell in that group.

Well, look at your OP. You did not give much info.

Oh, my appologies then. The way I had interepreted your question was as if you were trying to make fun of me.

So no, I've never in my life ridden a motorcycle, but I'd like to get started.

And you are in Canada and want to start with a sportbike?

You have such wonderful places up there, I would start on a dirtbike first.

What is a "hooligan bike"? The SV650 is widely regarded as a first rate novice-friendly sport/touring bike.

Agreed. an EX-250 or 500 are excellent starter bikes. The SV is a great bike too, and seem very tame to me, but to a new rider it might be a bit intimidating. The SV will have much more low end grunt than the EX's, due to the V-twin configuration. Here's what's nice about the EX line. Not much power, but enough to have fun with as a beginner. lower seating position, light weight and very manuverable. Buy one used, ride it for 6-12 months, and sell it for the same price you paid for it! Whatever you do, spend the extra cash on a good helmet and appropriate riding gear. That means a good quality helmet (Shoei and Arai are my personal choices...), jacket with good armor, pants (preferably ones that zip into the jacket), and good riding boots and gloves. Road rash sucks. I personally ride a 2001 GSXR-1000, and I started on a '96 Suzuki RF-600R. Then again, I was on dirt bikes for 2 years prior to starting on the street. Take a motorcycle safety course, and whenever you ride... pretend you are invisible. People don't pay enough attention while driving, so you have to do it for them. Riding is one of the most fun and relaxing pastimes I have... get out there and enjoy it! Just make sure you give yourself every ounce of defense you can. Cheers!

Wow, thanks a lot for the information!

Can anyone give me some details on aquiring your license? I know you can't have someone ride along with you such as your driving test, but I believe I once heard they follow you in a car. I'll be looking around on google, but if someone could fill me in in the mean time, I'd appreciate it.

The most important thing about your first bike is that its not too heavy & not extremely fast... even a slow bike is faster then most cars and you can get in trouble in a hurry, also I second the already mentioned advice about the helmet & riding gear, in particular the jacket.
As for getting your license, here in Connecticut you take your test in a large parking lot with an observer, you have to ride through a maze of cones at very low speed & at higher speed & demonstrate that you can do a hard stop...testing in other states may vary, but theres really only two ways to learn to ride.. the way I did by trial & error on 75cc & 90cc dirt bikes or you can get lessons.. one thing you don't want to try is learning on your own in traffic!

Another one of those comments that makes absolutely no sense. I agree, that you should start out small and work your way up. However, dont waste your time on a small bike that doesnt even go over the speed limit. Its a dead end bike that you will end up keeping... at least get something decent. I bought a sv650s as my first bike last year. Its a great bike to learn on and its strong enough to do whatever you want. I recommend that bike to you as its good on suspension, acceleration, braking, and cornering. Dont buy a 250 or something like that... you will regret it.

Kawasaki just put on the market a very smart bike

this is the naked version
ER6-n

and this is the "sport dressed" version
ER6-f

this bike have a very modern engine , is cheap to run but have many high-end feature (like wave-disk breaking or removable gearing)

The er6 engine is also compatible with EURO-3 pollution restriction.

The engine is a parallel Twin and it's run similar to the V90 Suzuki SV650 Twin.

the SV is also an option but i think is a littel to powerful fro a beninner and is also more expensive to run.

SV650 is not a hooligan bike... its a very basic V twin sporty beginners bike.. its only got a 650cc V twin in it.. will not do wheelies or stoppies unless heavily encouraged to do so.

we start girls new to the sport on these bikes all the time..
its a great scooter.. with a few mods can also be a great V twin class race bike..

SV650 is not a very "beginner friendly" bike , is too powerful and is too fast and reactive.

For learning si better something lighter and easier like an Honda CB 500 , honda CB 500 S , Kawasaki ER5 or Suzuki GS 500 or GS 500 S.

also Ducati Monster 620 is a good option because il very ligh and not so powerful.

Step one is to sign up for a Motorcycle Safety Course at the local tdch college or wherever near you has those classes. That's the best way to start. Plus if you pass the class you get to skip the road test to get your Motorcycle Drivers License.

As for a bike... Buy something used just to get started and use that for the first year until you are completely comfortable riding a bike on streets in all the different conditions you could come across. Then when you feel you are ready, move up to the next step.

Don't just go buy a big fast bike as your first one as you may find it too much to handle properly since you have no experience.

My first bike was a '93 (or so) Kawasaki EX500. Basically a Ninja 500 but they didn't call them Ninjas yet. Was a great bike and most people had no idea it was "only" a 500...
