Motorcycle repair question

Squisher

I'm getting ready to sell my wife's motorcycle which she hasn't ridden in two years. I started it last year and had already put some Stabul in the gas. But after I got it running and hot it wanted stall when I put in gear even though I was squeezing the clutch. This didn't happen when it first started or after I let it cool down and restarted it.
Do you think it's the stale gas/sparkplugs which I intended to change anyway or do you think its the oil sludging up and engaging the clutch even though I have clutch disengaged?

It's more likely related ot the old gas in the carbs............probably gummed up the floats and is probably flooding the engine whenit gets hot.

Nice bike..

As with all bikes that are left to sit for so long, I would suggest first to do the basics.. cause any problem that has showed up now probably wont show up after the basics..

I know you put stabil, but I dont know how long stablil lasts.. any idea on that. I suspect stabil + old oil and fouled plugs a cause.

Suggest do a basic tune up, clean airfilter, fresh oil and filter, drain fuel tank, inspect for rust and then fill fresh fuel + fuel injec/carb additive in fuel, clean carbs with a carb cleaner. If you have a petcock that has an "OFF" symbol then check the fuel lines to the petcock, or replace fuel lines (they rot) if you dont have an OFF position (I dont have an off position on my bike). Check Brake Fluid (they get old after 2 years or so). Check air pressure and tyres. Check / top up battery. Install some new plugs in there, and lastly clean the drive chain.

If the bike has a liquid cooled engine, replace coolant
</edit>

That should get most of the porblems out and be it ready to sell.

By the way I noticed the bike in teh picture is very well maintained, no dents and its pretty clean.. how come your wife no longer rides?

tgg

Yamaha has a really good carb cleaner that will get rid of any nasty chia-pet looking stuff in the carbs. Mix it with gas, fill the float bowls, and let it sit overnight. If I recall, you don't actually want this stuff in the gas tank, and you don't want to run it through the motor, but that might be wrong.

EDIT: I would just try fresh gas first, since that's the easiest thing to do. Stabil will help keep gas from getting really nasty over time, but it won't keep it very flammable.

how come your wife no longer rides?

Wife has now become a corporate wonk. She got this as one of her first purchases with the money she was making after not working for 15 years(raising kids). She's way too busy now to take the time out to really learn to ride.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guess I'll have to give it good going over.
Its only got 6700mi on it, though.

BTW-would you guys believe this thing is a 250cc.

well if you ride.. keep the bike.. its a nice bike to ride.. if you dont.. learn to ride...

its a nice bike.. I like the 250's..very nice for city riding..
