It's a shock to you that an experienced rider on an SV650 can beat an average rider on a liter bike? I fail to see why that surprises you. Any dumbass can buy a liter bike and brag about how fast it is but when it comes down to it the bike is only as fast as the rider on it.

If we're talking about racing at a drag strip and as Saga said unless the 1K rider is outright dumb I find it hard to believe an sv650 would take a 1K inline 4. It would all be about the start and even a poor one for the liter bike wouldn't affect the outcome as long as he can accelerate and shift through the next gear or two, he would easily pass the 650.

Compare a competent 600cc rider with a competent 1000cc rider with roughly the same experience, and it's unlikely the 600cc rider will completely destroy a 1000cc rider like Saga said.

as a note: my dad passed away from lung cancer this year, our family has been through a lot because of it. I understand why she is worried about me riding and not needing the extra stress. I just think I should do it for myself because I've always wanted too.

Edit: I'm not trying to be demeaning. I'm only 23. But it's funny what a few years out on your own will do for the respect of the wishes of your parents, as well as a humbling dose of reality about what it takes to be the "bread winner" of the household.

Don't listen to anyone here that insults you about living at home. I'm 24 and still do too. Like you I have my own car, paid my own college, and contribute around the household with money. I now own my motorcycle too. From my experiences here AT is totally nuts when it comes to the subject of living with parents, it's full of super independant people that love to rub your face, while they are taking a giant sh1t on the toilet positing from their laptops.

Buy the bike if you want it, I guarentee you you won't get kicked out of your house, you would need a hardcore parent to do that.

Also disregard the "wait a few years" advice from people here. You are young, you only live once, buy a bike now and enjoy it. This wait a few years business turns into waiting 2-3 decades and then buying a Goldwing or a Harley.

Where I bought my bike 98 % of the customers there are 40 +, maybe even 50.

Well, because at the RPM's they like to run at you only need first and second gear. The riding position is uncomfortable, and riding two up looks downright dangerous to me.

I agree with Greenman, there is only so much power you need from a bike, crotch rocekts are just overkill. I'm not a sportsbike guy in any way, and just don't see the point unless you are on the track somewhere. Everyone has their tastes though, I'm just glad mine don't venture in that direction 😉

Riding position is just fine for me. Keeping my back straight I have no issues. My seat could use an upgrade but that goes for most bikes, the seat on my Boulevard cruiser was just as bad if not worse. Don't get me wrong, I understand where you are coming from. A cruiser is more comfortable in the long run that's for sure. I suppose "for the street" should be defined. Because there's a difference between riding around town and taking a 300+ mile trip. My sportbike works beautifully on the street, with my requirements I couldn't really ask for much more. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

As far as 2 up riding goes, it definitely isn't what they are designed for... Luckily my girl doesn't show much interest in riding on the back. You could make the same argument with saddle bags and storage space. A big cruiser will do better in this department as well. I don't need either of the above so it all comes down to how "street use" is defined.

My advice, don't get the bike. Your mom seems a little emotionally fragile right now. You should wait until you've got your own place. She's not charging you rent, probably paying for college for you, she cooks you meals, probably does your laundry too. Do her a solid for once and respect her wishes. Wait till you finish school, get your own place and have a place to keep it. You should be taking that money and helping to pay for your education, not buying toys.

Some sportbikes definitely have better street ergos than others. I can ride my K5 GSXR 1000 all day long (have done 600 miles a day in the past, bike has 34,000 miles total), but 30 minutes on my friend's Ducati 748 and my body is pretty damn soar. The 750's are also regarded as being pretty damn comfortable - relatively speaking of course. The most comfortable sportbike still doesn't hold a candle to the average cruiser. It's simply something you get used too and accept...

As long as the passenger knows how to ride correctly, I don't have an issue with pillions either.

Sounds like it works for you, and that's all that really matters. I should also have noted that I'm old and somewhat beat up, so comfort is big on my list of requirements.
