I was watching a video from Yahoo driving safety and this video shows all the things not to do on a Motorcycle.

https://www.yahoo.com/autos/s/driver-runs-motorcyclist-yells-stop-205458513.html

First the driver is playing with a camera while trying to drive. Then he drives his cycle between 2 cars way too close to the cars. Then he both yells and curses at a driver for texting while driving. Then one cars takes off running like hell. Shortly after while driving a car hits him from the left side. He lives but he gets banged up pretty good.

People don't realize that Motorcycle people are perceived as scary gang members, especially if they are wearing dark clothing like leathers. The average citizen is skittish around people on Bikes. (Remember the Texas Incident?) Motorists get scared if you yell at them at a traffic stop. They probably assume you are drug addicted murderer or something. There seems to be a lot of violent people in some areas and being on a Motorcycle makes you a target for cars and trucks that are both bigger than you are.

Be careful out there.

"Playing with a camera?" It's obviously a helmet mounted camera like a GoPro. That's why it's still attached to him after the crash.

Guy on the bike is an asshole, it wasn’t right he got hit but he set all the events in motion. First he squeezes his bike between the two cars to curse the guy in the bmw. Then he pulls in front of the car and drives slow spending most of his time glancing back to make sure he stays in front of the bmw to annoy and slow him down. What makes the guy on the motorcycle an even bigger asshole is posting it and not even realizing how much of an asshole he come across as in the video.

You're pretty much wrong on all accounts:
- Texting drivers deserve death, or at the very least, to be called out on their asshole behaviour
- Lane sharing is legal in California, he had every right to be between the cars, so you're completely wrong here
- Didn't look like he was driving slowly to me, looked like he was going at exactly the appropriate speed for that road.
- How do you know he was glancing back? He was looking left to right, which is normal for a motorcyclist who is aware of his surroundings.

The driver of the car should be charged with attempted murder.

If the guy on the motorcycle is considered an asshole for telling the BMW driver to put down his cell phone then so be it, but the BMW driver should be arrested for felony hit and run/attempted murder.

//edit

finally watched the video, holy crap the BMW driver side swiped him after crossing double yellows.

In rpanic's world, the crimes of telling someone off for performing an illegal/dangerous activity (texting while driving) is equivalent to the crime of attempted murder.

Thats a huge leap, I said it wasn't right that the guy got hit from the start. The guy on the motorcycle was being an ass all the way up to getting hit. Your the guy saying drivers that txt should be put to death.

I guess riding legally is considered being an asshole these days. Damn, we got some low standards for "asshole" around here.

Hmm, never knew one could lane split legally. Only in California it seems.

Often, but not always, motorcycles have an amazing ability to detect their drivers level of assholeness and douchiness and deliver the appropriate amount of karma and pain to the driver.

After looking at the video several times, the BMW driver clearly needs to be charged with hit and run - at least.

The motorcyclist is a jerk. he was lane splitting where to me was unsafe to do so. He appeared to be right on the white line between the two cars which may be considered unsafe.

In ca at a stoplight it is not unsafe and perfectly legal. For the 10th time.

I didn't see that the motorcyclist did anything wrong or illegal. Now the driver of the BMW on the other hand should be charged with attempted manslaughter and felony hit and run.

Biker deserved to be called an asshole for telling someone at a stop light to put down their phone. He didn't deserve what came later.

In that situation it looked like it was a bit unsafe. It looks like the guy had to weave his way between the two cars to avoid hitting the mirrors (i.e. the cars were too close together to safely lane split).

And fuck Mr. BMW. Hopefully they catch him and toss his ass in jail.

It is neither legal nor illegal to lane split in CA.

Lane-splitting — a common practice in European nations — has been a fuzzy topic in California. The state has never expressly forbidden or allowed it.
Technically neither legal nor illegal, the practice has had the tacit approval of the California Highway Patrol and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

there is a bill working its way thru that would legalize and provide guidelines for when lane splitting would be allowable.

Granted - if you read the article, there were events leading up to this that had the biker agitated, however as a motorcyclist, I can say this guy was an ass anyway, and karma is a bitch. Legal or not, that was VERY limited amount of space to try to work through.

The light was red and the car was stopped. He should have just ignored what the guy was doing and went about his business.

Regardless of what was said though, the guy in the BMW needs to be arrested then laid on the pavement and had his legs run over a few dozen times.

Unlike every other state, there is no law on the books which states lane splitting is illegal. Therefore, in my book it's perfectly legal. Seriously, you cannot get a ticket for safely lane splitting in CA. Refer to this handy dandy CHP guide to lane splitting for reference: http://lanesplittingislegal.com/assets/docs/CHP-lane-splitting-guidelines-California.pdf. Especially this part:

Messages for Other Vehicle Drivers
1) Lane splitting by motorcycles is not illegal in California when done in a safe and prudent
manner.

In that situation it looked like it was a bit unsafe. It looks like the guy had to weave his way between the two cars to avoid hitting the mirrors (i.e. the cars were too close together to safely lane split).

the cars are not moving. if it fits it's safe

There is no such thing as "neither legal nor illegal." If it is not illegal, then it is legal.

Yes, the bimmer douche should be arrested. And yes, he was wrong to be texting while driving (although we don't actually see him texting, and his car is not moving when the video opens), but there are good ways to handle interacting with humans, and lots of bad ways. The roads and highways are a random sampling of humanity, and so of course at any given time they harbor people who will take your rant and slink humbly away, as well as people who will hop out of their cars and stab you to death in a heartbeat. If you want to go around acting aggressively with strangers, something that few people are actually equipped to be doing, then you take your chances. If I chose to get involved, my approach would be more likely to open with "Hey man, I noticed you wandering across the lane a bit back there. Might be good to put the phone down." If the driver proved a prick I could further explain that as a cyclist I had a vested interest in his driving, and we could take it from there. The "Put the fucking phone down you're in your car, asshole" option should be held in reserve. It's not a great opening gambit.

LOL. Wearing hats in California is "neither legal nor illegal" since there's no law on the books making it clear.

Best not to wear a hat, then.

here's what I don't understand though - the guy was in a fucking ducati. If he would've paid attn to his mirrors he should have seen the BMW pull to the left and accelerate; YOU'RE IN A FUCKING DUCATI DUDE, JUST FLICK YOUR WRIST AND BONE OUT BEFORE YOU GET IN TROUBLE.
