He (the BMW) didn't cross double yellow lines. He waited until those double yellow lines changed into a third lane (yellow w/ hash for both directions with a full lane in the middle). Technically it's legal to use that lane to pass in CA if the driver can see that it's clear of traffic (it was). .

Totally wrong, that is a center turn lane (solid yellow outside with dashed center ine) and drivers use this only to turn left (driver can only be moving 200ft while in this lane). It is illegal to use this as a passing lane as it's pretty dangerous as imagine if two people try to pass at the same time. Every driver in California should know this as it's usually one thing tested for on driver's license test (written and driving).

You are absolutely right sir, my fault. It's governed by §21460.5 (left turn lane) and not §21659 (which is for 3 lane highways). I was actually kinda wondering why they would allow it (being that they don't here). But hey they allow filtering... so you never know.

In any case - my error... sorry NS1!

Yeah we're close to Mad Max territory in regards to water, but our traffic laws still get enforced so don't want visitors to think left turn lanes are passing lanes. Most traffic laws in CA for the most part usually follow common sense, the ones that don't are revenue generating :)

I didn't see that the motorcyclist did anything wrong or illegal. Now the driver of the BMW on the other hand should be charged with attempted manslaughter and felony hit and run.

Driver was stopped at a red light at the time when the guy on the bike verbally jumped his ass and cursed at him. Now if his talking/texting (while moving) caused an accident or came close to doing so then that that kind of language is warranted but for all we know the guy waited till he was stopped to call or text but in the end I do agree he should be charged with attempted manslaughter/illegally passing/leaving the scene of an accident. I guess the moral of the whole deal is don't go around trying to be "righteous Ray" by slinging the F-word at someone who is not bothering or endangering you at the time, it might be the guy who's armed and takes a shot at you or (as in this case) runs you off the road, too many lunatics in the world to go looking for trouble.

I've only had one weird experience with a biker. I was passing him in the fast lane as he came up on a van gowing slower than he in the slow lane. He turned and looked at me then extended his left arm and angrily waved at me to slow down (I assume to let him pass), which I didn't do. He later caught up to me and passed me and started throwing large metal balls (possibly large bearings?) at the street in front of my car. This was decades ago and I was in my '67 Corvair with no way for the balls to get in the engine, and thankfully none hit the windshield. I have looked at bikers differently ever since. Anyone who needs to make that much noise and need that much attention could take a lesson from a well trained dog.
