motorcycle battery/electrical issue?

So I got the wrong battery...sales guy gave me the wrong one. I put it in and connected it before i noticed the posts were wrong (negative to positive). The correct battery has reverse posts. Yeah I know...shoulda been paying attention. I thought I heard a "pop."

Since then, I haven't gotten the bike lights to show or engine to crank or anything...kinda like there's no battery at all.Is there something that could have happened to the battery or electrical system? This problem is with a totally new and different battery btw - could the new battery even have issues?

Thanks for the help

you shorted out teh fuse... yes you have done damage to your bike.. should have been paying attention.

at least first check the fuse, if that's still solid (i doubt) you got bigger problems.. rectifier and stuff.. and if its computer controlled (fuel injected) goodbye computer.

but check your fuses first.

so you connected it backwards and you are blaming the sales guy?

like the good guy said, check the fuses and it should be fine...

if it was fine before, I don't think you could have done any damage

Well I was in a rush and the post locations are different on the two battery types....so the post I assumed was positive was actually negative - because the battery is totally different.
Oh well.

checked the fuses and they all seem good. They are the plastic type and there doesn't seem to be damage. I'm considering the new battery as a possible problem also. I had just charged it and the battery tender had indicated that it was fully charged. However, when I put it in the bike and the bike didn't turn on, I put it back on the charger again to check and the lights seem to indicate that the battery still needs to charge. So either the battery is screwed or the charger/tender is.

The electronics in your bike are. Toast. Smoked. No more. Gone. Goodbye.

what kind of bike is it?

one way to check if the bike is toast (electronics), turn it on (no battery), put it in 6th gear, have someone push you and jump start the bike.. if the bike runs then your electronics are good, your fuses are good, else your fscked.

Its a 96 Kawasaki Vulcan LTD. Its a cruiser. If I screwed the electronics....repair will be for everything? And is it possible to have screwed all of the electronics with the battery mistake or just certain parts?

yes the bike won't run if there is no electronics, but I don't know why he said sixth, try it in third

the charger will probably put on a light always, it's cheap

The battery I made the mistake with and the one I'm using now are totally different. Bought the new one recently - but its been acting weird (tender light thing I mentioned before). So I'm gonna have to charge overnite just to make sure its ok and then try it again.

okay charge the battery. The LTD 500 is the same as the Ninja 500 engine, its carb based.. Put in a higher gear and push start it without the battery (put key in ON though). I think you got a 5 speed, so you can do with 4-5. The reason for higher gear so its easier to start. I have never gotten my bike started by push starting on 1-2.. i need 4-6 to get started. Same with other bikes i push started.

Anyway if your fuse is good, then you got lucky. The rectifier is behnd the fuse. I hope you didnt blow the rectifier, if that's blown, not sure of the stator (alt). But since the engine wasnt running if anything it was the rectifier. (changes AC from stator to DC).

I would charge it up fullly and try, and then try push starting also.. i hate it when bikes dont run right.
