Too bad the 335 just came out, I think MT was a too eager to have the first comparison review of the new G35.

Interesting, they gave it to the inferior, more expensive car just because of a little vibration in the shifter and pedals... hrmm.

Not surprising, the automotive rags have been sucking BMW's cock for years now.

Edit-I didn't read the article, did this latest Bimmer have iDrive? If so, did they knock any points off for that abomination?

lol the 330i costs 10K more, if only life were like magazine articles, "if all the cars in this roundup were free. . . "

Inferior is a subjective term - they concede the Infiniti is quicker, but felt the BMW was better to drive.

they justified the results pretty well. the Bimmer felt better, no chasis issues, and just all around was better, but not quite as fast, or good on the slalom... but was better all around.

And your wallet. It'll be $40k+ and will likely equal or slightly beat the G35's acceleration numbers.

G35 for me!

Comparably equipped:

330i as tested price: $45,165
G35 as tested price: $36,000

$9,000 better? &%!% no!

I dunno - I drive a Maxima, but I think I'm done with Japanese cars for the time being. They just seem to lack personality (though Subarus still have some character IMO). My next car will likely be a 3-series or an E46 M3. They really do feel better to drive, and I'm willing to sacrifice some reliability in favor of performance and personality.

It wasn't as fast or good on the slalom...but was better all around? Could that be anymore subjective?

I don't know where you guys are getting this slalom stuff - the BMW was faster in the slalom, and described as much easier to drive fast in the slalom. They called this a "decisive win" for the Bimmer.

Oh, you will. Trust me on that. I've owned an E36 and driven an E46, I much prefer our 2006 Lexus IS250 to either of them.

Bah, everybody says that, I rented a G35 for a week and was unimpressed. It's for people who equate objective peroformance data with driver enjoyment. The BMW is the better driver's car if you take out price, but it's still too expensive for me.

That's a really nice car, but I find Lexuses (and, for that matter, nearly all Toyotas, with the exception of the FJ Cruiser) awfully bloodless and dull. They are wonderfully engineered, but they seem really really uninspired - it's like they're obviously designed by committee - in that respect the new IS cars are, IMO, poorer than the old one. If they made an IS350 with manual transmission I'd give it a hard look, but ultimately I think I'd get a Bimmer instead.

So it was a "tie", but $9K price difference was not enough to tip the tie to G35?
With that price difference, nothing but a complete g35 beatdown by the 330i would do, and all it managed was a tie.

Well, it's mainly my wife's car. I drove the IS250 and the IS350 and the IS350 is very very quick (faster than any 3 series I've driven anyway and I've driven an E36 M3, and a 740i), brakes are excellent and handling is very good also. I would like to see a 6spd manual transmission in the IS350 although I suspect Lexus would sell very few of them in that iteration. I'd also like to see them allow the driver to disable some of the onboard nanny controls. I suspect that these things will come about in the next year or so though as there has been quite a bit written on that subject in the automotive press and online.

I've also driven my friend's Infiniti G35 Coupe (another autotragic-but at least you can get that in a manual) and it is a very very nice car. I'd give that a serious look if I were in the market for a sporty coupe.

I just have a bad taste in my mouth from the two 3 series Bimmers we owned. Both cost us quite a bit to maintain once they were out of warranty. No thanks, you can keep your Bimmers. I'll stick with the Japanese cars.

If you assume that MT is in bed with BMW, so is every other auto magazine and website. BMW must be, by far, the winningest manufacturer since at least the 80s in these kinds of comparo tests. I think it's a function of the fact that a) BMW make cars that are really really great to drive; b) magazine writers, unlike individuals, don't have to pay for the cars; and c) the writers aren't around to pay for repairs when the cars are out of warranty.
