Oh, you will. Trust me on that. I've owned an E36 and driven an E46, I much prefer our 2006 Lexus IS250 to either of them.

That's a really nice car, but I find Lexuses (and, for that matter, nearly all Toyotas, with the exception of the FJ Cruiser) awfully bloodless and dull. They are wonderfully engineered, but they seem really really uninspired - it's like they're obviously designed by committee - in that respect the new IS cars are, IMO, poorer than the old one. If they made an IS350 with manual transmission I'd give it a hard look, but ultimately I think I'd get a Bimmer instead.

test drive one of these, any gen will do.

Yeah, then what?

If you assume that MT is in bed with BMW, so is every other auto magazine and website. BMW must be, by far, the winningest manufacturer since at least the 80s in these kinds of comparo tests. I think it's a function of the fact that a) BMW make cars that are really really great to drive; b) magazine writers, unlike individuals, don't have to pay for the cars; and c) the writers aren't around to pay for repairs when the cars are out of warranty.

You forgot d) magazine writers must be blind because clearly the latest Bangled cars are some of the ugliest to come out of BMW in decades.

Actually I wouldn't say they're blind to it - pretty much every review of Bimmers I've seen since the Bangle 7-series has come out has criticized their looks. The E90 has gotten less bad press because it's merely dull, as opposed to outright hideous, but they have definitely taken a nose dive it terms of style - every BMW model since the 7-series emerged has been uglier than its predecessor. I also don't think journalists have ignored the shortfalls of i-Drive, which has been more or less uniformly lambasted.

At the end of the day, though, BMWs are great to drive, including the ugly new ones.

It all depends on what you're looking for. I'm sure most motorheads who'll drive the Bimmer and the Infinity will prefer the Bimmer because of subjective feelings like driver enjoyment. These things don't reflect well on the data sheets. Sure, there are faster cars, and there are sportier cars, but Bimmers are so well engineered to do anything.
It's true that most non-motorheads will get better value with the opposition. If you're not looking for real driver involvement, chassis and steering feedback and an engine that begs to be pushed around you're probably off with something else. IIRC the Lexus IS doesn't even have a properly detachable stability control.

Look at American cars, they play the specification game very well - on paper, you get alot of engine, alot of equipment and alot of room for not much $, but then go and drive one - it's f'ing awful.

Again, Lexus are probably wonderful cars, but I can't see too many enthusiasts trading their E90 (new 3 Series) for IS of any kind. Some of it is badge snobbery, some of it has merit.

Now, Motor Trend isn't Consumer Review, they aren't supposed to be a consumer guide but a magazine for people who love cars. And obviously, the better car is the one more enjoyable, it's always like this. Why confront 36K$ car with a 46K$ car? I don't know. But their logic is valid. Cars at this price aren't that good of value anyway.

G35 for me!

I dunno - I drive a Maxima, but I think I'm done with Japanese cars for the time being. They just seem to lack personality (though Subarus still have some character IMO). My next car will likely be a 3-series or an E46 M3. They really do feel better to drive, and I'm willing to sacrifice some reliability in favor of performance and personality.

You drove an E46? Lucky you!

Why? It looked cool but it was overpriced, underpowered, heavy, it only seats two and it didn't handle or brake particularly well.

So, we're left with: It looked cool. Wow, I'm so impressed.

I thought they looked pretty cool. Not cool enough to spend $40k on one though.

Who takes Motor Trend or Car and Driver seriously anymore? Any mag that uses a baseless "Gotta have it factor" to so obviously scew results in favor of something is not worth relying on.

BMWs has never been about HP. Besides, the g handles like a pig, and it barely has any top end.

To OP: The 335 should be faster than the IS350

Say WHAT?

It does handle like a pig; anything handles better than a g.
The 3 and the IS handles much, much better
Once you hit 80mph, it doesn't pull anymore. You can WOT and the car will just sit there.
The exhaust tone is one the worst, most annoying one ever. (for coupes)
The interior is just as nice as the Nissan Altima; no where near the IS or the 3.
Infiniti clock is one of the worst inventions ever
And IMO, it looks like crap compare to the 3 or the IS.

Bottom line - you get what you pay for - a POS.

The G coupe concept for 07/08 though is freaken nice, no doubt about it.

the rest of the car is good, but i don't care for the exhaust tone stock or modified, it's just flat sounding, it sounds the same everywhere except for volume, regardless of throttle/rpm.

04+ TL with intake sounds good.

The G35 has pretty good handling really. But you're right about the top end acceleration. G35\350zs absolutely run out of GO at 80mph.
