Motor Trend 2003 COTY: Infiniti G35

When did they start allowing imports into the COTY? Not that I have a problem with it or anything, just didn't know they changed the rules...

They used to do inport COTY too. They must have lumped them together recently.

I am VERY surprised the MiniCooper didn't get it. I always figured a new, edgy, model was almost a shoe-in, regardless of quality (ie: PT cruiser, t-bird)

I saw the coupe the other day at the dealership when I was having my car's ignition recall fixed..

So damn nice. If I was a bit older, had some extra money in the bank, I wouldn't mind trading my car in for one right now.. 🙂

Though I'd probably get the 350Z over it because I don't need/want the practicality of the G35C.. 😛

Not a bad choice, but rather interesting considering that the G35 Sedan lost to the BMW 3 series in many magazine's comparos. It's nice to see someone new to get the award though.

I was under the impression that the COTY award was kind of a front and that there's actually a lot of politics powering it.

G35 is an awesome car. I almost got one, but I decided to go almost-new instead... it just was a better all-around deal.

I think the G35 beat the BMW in the Motor Trend/Automobile Magazine comparos and lost in the C&D comparo. 2/3 ain't bad. 🙂

Motor Trend combined their Car of the Year / Import Car of the Year awards and added Sport Utility of the Year a few years back. I guess it was a good thing they combined the awards....as I recall, the Ford Thunderbird was the only domestic new car in the running last year. 🙂

I am generally skeptical of MT, which I regard as far and away the worst of the major car mags. That said, I tend to agree with NFS4 that the Mini Cooper would have been the obvious choice, but the G35 is worthy as well. It may be that MT wanted to acknowledge the mini-Renaissance that Nissan has experienced in the last year.

the 350Z should have won that. its basically the same damn car and its better all arround

Actually, I don't think it is for most buyers. The G35, in coupe form, has all the same go-fast parts as the Z, with the practical advantage of rear seats and more storage space. IMO it is a more handsome car as well. The sedan is, well, a sedan, and many buyers will only buy a car with four doors - this makes the G35 by far the more versatile design.

The G35 Sedan got spanked in the C&D comparo. I havent read MT's comparo with the 3-series and G35. But Automobile gave the G35 Coupe an edge over the 3-series coupe; now, the coupe and the sedan are two different cars, despite the same platform and powertrain, but they don't drive the same. Did Automobile say the G35 Sedan is better than the 3 as well?

I don't think Automobile compared the G35 sedan with the 3 Series sedan.

I was expecting the Mini Cooper to get it, but the G35 is also deserving of high praise

I think the reason is that the G35 has broader appeal, visually and otherwise. The Mini has a strong following among enthusiasts like us but many people really don't like how it looks or appreciate its finer subtleties.

Of course, the huge amount of ad revenue for teh G35 piled into MT from Infiniti couldn't have hurt...

Like me. I would have to tear the front seat out and drive from the back. I love that G35 though. Adding it to the list of other cars I can not afford. 🙁
This sucks, I need more money

Well, look at the last couple of winners of the award:

PT Cruiser
New Beetle

I would think that the Mini would have been a favorite 😀

But again, both the beetle and the PT Cruiser made much bigger of a splash than the mini did from a visual appeal standpoint.

I'd have to disagree there 😉

The New Beetle looked like, well an old Beetle. Not much new there.
The PT Cruiser looked like an old 40's car.

Most Americans had never even seen a Mini here before b/c not many were sold in the US. It's the shortest car sold in America and is definitely a car that "stands out" in a crowd despite its size.

Visually, I'd say that the Mini has both of those other two beat as far as getting people's attention mainly for the fact that a lot of people go "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT LITTLE THING!!?" whereas people who saw the New Beetle for the first time knew EXACTLY what it was.

I think that was the charm of the Bettle. That it looked liked the old one 🙂. I had the impression that MT had a big bias towards domestics. (I even remember they named the Malibu as COTY a while back).
I think they named the G35 because it (hopefully) marks a new beggining for Infiniti.
