As cool as it might be, the Nexus 7 US version lacks international LTE making it useless worldwide. I'd be ok sacrificing VZW coverage if that gains Bands 3 and 7 for worldwide coverage. Verizon's not gonna just let you slap a SIM in anyway right? You have to make sure it works on CDMA also and register it.

I knew about the worldwide LTE being useless. I was just thinking how great it would be if they tossed in that CDMA.

But yes, that's exactly how Verizon works. The device has to have a CDMA radio in it to be allowed on VZW's network. Next year when they launch LTE-voice is going to be amazing to those die hard VZW fans. The network will essentially be a GSM network (finally)!
 
And if it's $200 *on contract* and competing with flagship phones like the S4, HTC One and iPhone 5 there's no way I'm going to consider it. We'll know in 2 more days. Pricing will make or break this phone, IMO.

Even at $300 off contract I'll likely wait for the Nexus 4 refresh.

No chance in hell it will be $200 on contract if its priced at $300 off-contract.

Both have been rumored. Flagship pricing on contract, and Nexus 4-like pricing off contract. Leo Laporte babbled something about it not being targeted for people buying off contract to use on prepaid.

Hence my point. Pricing will make or break this phone. $300 off contract is a win, $200 on contract will be a huge lose.
 
Carriers selling a $300 phone for $200 on a 2 year contract would not surprise me in the slightest.

Did you word that correctly? Seems like the opposite should be true, this phone IS targeted for people buying off contract to use with prepaid plans.

look, it cant be $200 on contract. that prices it up there with the highest end phones, and this is definitely not a high end phone. by the time this is actually out in a few months it will be two generations behind the high end phones because note 3 and gs4 plus will all have snapdragon 800. $500 million worth of marketing wont convince anyone this is a high end phone, they will end up with a warehouse full of unsold stuff.

this phone is just a mid-range bone theyre throwing to the nerds, the types who want near stock android, still have unlimited and who do douchy things like use pdanet. classy people will get ultra.

Yes, but that will depend on how VZW handles the roll out of VoLTE. If they can just turn a switch on, then it won't be a problem for the majority of users on LTE already.

Also, after VZW gets most of it's network or a certain amount, they'll kill the 3G/CDMA side of things and refarm that as LTE or something of that sort (I am assuming).

unless VZW builds out LTE coverage like mad (make it match 100% of what is covered by 3g now) turning off 3G/CDMA next year would be suicide. there are massive massive parts of this country without any LTE service.

I drove from Chicago to southern Missouri and had 4g the entire time. Verizon's 4g coverage is insane.

i can drive 1 mile from my house and lose 4g and not pick it up again for another 50 miles, where it stays on for maybe another 10 and then goes out for another 100 or so
 
I see your lousy coverage and raise you Colorado. Here in Colorado, I can drive less than 8 miles west of my house and have "no service" and then proceed to drive due west for several hours with "no service" or sporatic 1 bar service. This is on all 4 carriers, although of the 4, Verizon is probably the best. But "best" is a relative thing when getting even one bar is a matter of luck.

Verizon CDMA doesn't get turned off until 2021. However, data devices this year like the new Nexus 7 are no longer required to have CDMA radios as their initial LTE rollout is largely complete. They'll start filling in the holes to have 100% coverage of their old CDMA footprint within a year.

I wouldn't expect any CDMA-less phones until the end of 2014 though, and that's actually going to put Sprint in a tough position since that means one of the largest CDMA players won't be requesting new hardware.

This is what I was getting at. Honestly, if Verizon keeps up the rate at which they're going with LTE deployments and focuses on VoLTE and getting their coverage 1:1 with LTE/3G, then by George, I think they'll be the best carrier in the US, coverage and reliability wise.

And Verizon did say they'll start rolling out VoLTE at the end of 2014 so I don't expect any devices until then either, dagamer.

Didn't T-Mobile do something like this with the Nexus 4 last year? I vaguely remember an uproar about it.

Verizon won't kill CDMA anytime soon. Not until at least 2021.

I usually pull more if I was crackflashing like I used to. 350mb for each ROM, about 25 a month, which is like 9gbs plus I used connect my tablet and computer to the hotspot (or USB tether, depends which I'm using) and download TV shows and movies (usually another 10gbs). So yeah, I could use around 30 as well.

I'm doing a favor by using only 10gbs 😛
