so the Moto G is actually a little larger than the x, physically, while sporting a smaller screen, worse specs overall...

But how does it stack up in everyday usage, say websurfing mainly? Is the difference stark, or is it barely there?

The biggest difference I've noticed is in color accuracy. The G screens (the ones I've seen anyway) don't have much, if any factory calibration. It drives me nuts.

As far as speed goes, you'd probably be pretty happy with it if you don't play a lot of games. The GPU is a lot weaker, but it's a perfectly adequate CPU and 1GB of RAM isn't a problem yet.

Moving from an X to a G, I would find it very difficult to give up active notifications.

yeah, actually it's considering whether to get a G or X for family members.

G is probably good enough.

I love my Moto G

I sold my Nexus 5 and LG G2 phone so I could buy a couple nice Tablets. Went with a Moto G for my phone, got a used one for $130.00, unlocked it for $5

It is very fast, and I actually really like the screen. I find the screen to be great. (Better than Nexus 4 I owned previously in the past)

It browses the Web just as well as any high end phone I've used in my opinion. Might be a second or 2 longer opening pages here and there, but things are smooth

It doesn't feel slow at all, and 1GB of ram hasn't been an issue for me.

It's also very easy to handle/hold, feels good in hand.

Battery life is fantastic

Plays games without issue

Audio clarity and volume is great too.

I like it.

Camera is average at best - About the only negative thing about it.

By far the best $150 phone out there.

What games give you problems with the GPU?

None do for me. The Adreno 305 is basically a slighty faster Adreno 225. (same as in the S3/HTC One X)

It plays any game I've tried on it fine.

G has some of the best battery life of any smartphone on the market, X is in the below average category in that regard. That usurps the minor spec advantage the X has over it.

Battery life probably due to LTE on the X. Double-edge sword with LTE though as after using LTE, I would not want to go back. I just charge my phone more if needed.

Moto X also has Active Notifications as well as intelligent Voice Commands. 4.5" vs 4.7" screen. LCD vs AMOLED. Camera. Plus the other higher end specs on the X vs the G. Both fine phones in their own right, but the G is priced where it is at as it is not competing at the high-end level. The X is supposed to be a high-end flagship type phone.

Both phones can handle most everyday normal tasks, but the X just does it better so I would not consider that battery life "usurps the minor spec advantage the X has over it". There is quite a bit more to the X than just minor spec advantages.

If you want a real bargain pick up a Nokia Lumia 520 for $59.99 brand new. It does everything as well, just runs Windows 8 and specs are bottom tier but it actually is not a bad user experience. I picked up a few for my kids to use rather than their basic slider type phones as the 520 is about the same price new as most of the old basic texting phones are used.

Is the LTE radio on at all times? I don't use LTE at all. Might explain the bad battery life.

I don't pay for LTE on Republic Wireless on my Moto X and find that I can typically get 7-9 hours of screen on time (almost entirely web browsing) and potentially 48 hours between charges, after some tweaking. Out of the box with all of my apps loaded and no changes to what was allowed to wake the phone, I was getting about 5 hours of screen-on time. The G is almost certainly going to best this, but not by as much if neither is running LTE. I'll take my X any day of the week for active notifications and the more attractive screen.

As for the Moto G, Eufloria is single-digit FPS unless on High, much less Ultra, but I don't know if it has more to do with the slower single-threaded performance (X has 2 much faster cores, G has 4 slower cores) or if it's the GPU's fault.

Moto G is a great deal for the money, but I honestly wouldn't go back to a 1gb Android handset unless I really had to.

What kills me is screen size I've had my note 2 for almost a year now. Anything with a screen under 5 inches makes me cringe

The Moto G is perfectly acceptable for everyday usage. Especially the 16gb model. Apps run just fine, performance is smooth, battery life is great and depending on where you live HSPA+ is still acceptable. Basically, you're giving up some of the premium features like touchless control and active notifications but the actual everyday experience is comparable.

Older comparison but still usable.

1GB ram and KitKat has been problem free for me.

Phone runs everything just fine. Stock Android for the win.

I'd buy a bunch of them at $79.99 and give them as gifts
I thought about it but I don't know who I'd give them to. Most of my friends and family already have smartphones and the ones that don't don't want them. I guess I could get one and upgrade the old lady's iPhone 4 which has been a pain in her ass since she got it.

That's a big upgrade from a iPhone 4 too. My girl is using hers til the 28th of this month. I bought her a used 5c 32gb locally for $300 two weeks ago and she's dying to get rid of that iPhone 4 all it does it lock up on her left and right

I dunno about you, but I would have bought as many as I could and sold them online/CL for a nice profit.

for there are three things that would make me get the X over the G.
1. camera
2. active display
3. weight (this is the biggest factor for me the G is very heavy)

Today was my last day to keep the G before being able to return it, and I will be returning it and going with the X instead. I miss 4G, and I just can't do 16GB anymore.
