The biggest difference I've noticed is in color accuracy. The G screens (the ones I've seen anyway) don't have much, if any factory calibration. It drives me nuts.
As far as speed goes, you'd probably be pretty happy with it if you don't play a lot of games. The GPU is a lot weaker, but it's a perfectly adequate CPU and 1GB of RAM isn't a problem yet.
Moving from an X to a G, I would find it very difficult to give up active notifications.

G has some of the best battery life of any smartphone on the market, X is in the below average category in that regard. That usurps the minor spec advantage the X has over it.
Moto G is a great deal for the money, but I honestly wouldn't go back to a 1gb Android handset unless I really had to.
I would think LTE is biggest difference.
I thought about it but I don't know who I'd give them to. Most of my friends and family already have smartphones and the ones that don't don't want them. I guess I could get one and upgrade the old lady's iPhone 4 which has been a pain in her ass since she got it.I'd buy a bunch of them at $79.99 and give them as gifts

I might. I'm sure they're still there, the reason the store is closing down is because nobody goes thereI dunno about you, but I would have bought as many as I could and sold them online/CL for a nice profit.
