For $99 dollars you don't buy the moto g as a phone, you buy it to use as an android version of an ipod touch.

That's pretty much what I've been recommending - if you just need a cheap iPod Touch for your kids & don't require iTunes functionality, get a Moto G. For use with little kids, for another $50 you can get a Kiosk Mode app that lets you literally lock everything else out except the apps you want: (including the Settings app)

Add an Otterbox case:

Voila. Drop-proof & software-proof for under $275.

If I can get one for $100 I would totally do it, maybe 2 of them. Sure as hell beats the crap of out MTK6589 china made phones at 2x the price.

Seriously, I'd buy one just as a backup camera for $99 if there's no fees...

You can't.

The box does not say prepaid anywhere though, at least not the ones leaked. So here's to hoping!

I think you can but it has to be on a verizon prepaid account for at least 6 months. (I might be wrong on that, its been awhile since I've followed page plus stuff closely)

With 8gb storage (even less usable) it won't be very useful for listening to music.

Modern iPod Touches are used for far more than just music...tons of apps, a 5-megapixel camera, music streaming services like Pandora & MOG, etc. And 8 gigs is still like 2,000 songs, which is a pretty decent amount. And for $99, this is like a third the price, and you're not locked into iTunes!

This article confirms that the $100 Moto G is sold as a Verizon Prepaid phone. So sorry, but no MVNO folks. I knew it was too good to be true. I wonder though why none of the leaked pictures show a 'Verizon Prepaid' box just like any other Verizon Prepaid phone boxes. Oh well...

Apparently there are also other restrictions about Verizon Prepaid phones, including this Moto G. For instance it cannot be used on Verizon postpaid account (e.g. to replace your lost/stolen phone or if you want a cheap upgrade when you're month to month, or want to sell your subsidized phone and profit, etc.) until it is used on Verizon Prepaid account for six months. I personally have no idea though, so can someone who's familiar with Verizon Prepaid confirm this?

Biggest thing I'm curious about is if you can just buy it & never use the service. Would make an awesome iTouch replacement! Also great for little kids if you lock it down...

How did you get to the $275 number?

- $99 for the phone
- You linked to a free app
- $32 for the case

I posted that before the $99 deal existed; it was $179 for the GSM version at that time. The app is a trial; it's $50 for the full version. $179 + $50 + $32 = $261 (plus any S/H charges & taxes). Under $275.

I recently picked up a Galaxy Tab for Kids tablet for my kiddo ($219 including the handle case & kid-friendly jumbo pen); the rubberized case is a lifesaver. I would definitely pick up something like an Otterbox if I were picking up a Moto G for a child. There may be something better for totally locking down the system other than SureLock Kiosk, but it's worked well for me (at least in business enviroments). Another method (free) is to use AppLock: (it can even lock the Settings app)

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.domobile.applock

So $99 for the new CDMA Moto G + $32 for an Otterbox + free AppLock app = $130-ish. Doesn't quite stupid-proof it like the kiosk app does, but at least it locks kids out from messing with things they shouldn't!

does he really need to explain?

Posts like this drive me nuts

It is what it is. I see the same type of posts in hardware - "no one needs more than a quad-core & 16GB of RAM". Yeah, unless you're doing high-end gaming, CAD, 3D modeling, video editing, or anything else that needs lots of CPU power 😛

Also, I've seen like 2 cracked phones that were in Otterboxes in the last week alone. I swear they build Achilles heels into these things just to get you to upgrade 😀

I agree this is an insanely nice "let the kids screw around with it" device.

That's the thing...it's hard to justify a $500 iPad for a kid (plus a protective case) for most people. $99 though, that's a different story...when the kids are whining and you can hand them their own "Angry Birds" device to play with at a restaurant, or throw an episode of Curious George on it for the backseat of the car, that's pretty doable.

I hesitated to even get the Galaxy Tab for Kids for my 2-year-old for Christmas, but the top-end Leappad was like $150 and the games are upwards of $25 each, so I'd be spending that on cartridges anyway. And this way we can add standard Google Play education apps & kid-friendly games and it integrates with the kid's GUI on the system, and we can also switch it to standard Android format for adults to use. Honestly though, the thing has already proven it's value...the drawing app alone made it allllll worth it...zero mess, no crayons on the wall, no markers on clothes, hehehehe

I've got a Moto G as my backup device. It's great for £99 and makes me wonder why someone would spend more on an Android device.

Man, I got one for my dad as a christmas gift because he wanted a smartphone for email and stuff but keep his old dumb phone on verizon because he's really comfortable with it.

So I get him a Moto G because its perfect for his needs. Cheap and get a prepaid account with T- Mobile to keep it cheap.

When he goes to T-Mobile to activate it, they tell him the phone is a piece of crap and tell him to buy a Note 3.

Now he wants me to return it. What the hell.
