I want to get many years out of this phone but the apps killing when I have a browser opened just breaks my heart. Will there be a fix soon? I really don't want to get a new phone

You want a low end smartphone to last for a long time, and you're complaining when a low end smartphone doesn't operate like a high end smartphone?

The Moto G is probably best in class for what it is. You're being near delusional on what it should be.

No offense dude but that is not a bug, that is what 1GB of RAM on a 2014 smartphone gets you. The "fix" is a higher-end phone with 2GB+ if you want to multitask.

I know for a fact that Chrome on my phone can hit my 2GB ceiling (often enough I wish I had 3GB), so I imagine just opening modern Chrome would race to the 1GB limit. Web Browsing eats ram, has for a decade.

This is also why I consider the 1GB RAM equipped iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ to be some of the biggest ripoffs ever to hit to mobile industry (at least since the iPad 3).

you need to root, install Faux123's kernel and get FauxClock so that you can enable ZRAM at 384MB and Kernel Same-Page Merge.

The ZRAM virtualizes, buffers, and compresses the disk improving throughput when other data is needed (such as reading from flash to launch an app or bring back into memory). Minimal battery hit and data is retrieved faster since it's in the RAM. Obviously you won't get the same benefit as my Nexus 5 set at 1024MB on this.

The KSM virtualizes redundant portions of apps-- the java VM footprint for one, OpenGL-ES2.0 libraries are 9-16MB redundant data in every app that's using them, etc. Quite a savings. This significantly lessens the effect of Google always having a bunch of other apps that they install like Newsstand, Magazines, the Books app, Movies and Entertainment, Music, Amazon, Amazon Appstore, Amazon Prime/Music, Facebook Messenger (actually I haven't used that in ages, but having it installed lets me keep using the stock built in messaging platform in the Facebook app like before it was mandatory), Skype, Google+, etc. Finally, use AppQuarantine to lock and disable apps that like to run around in the background doing things or simply keeping themselves in RAM while you're aren't currently using them. Facebook, Instagram, can't do it to Twitter, etc. It's a widget you tap on on your homescreen just like opening the app itself, same app icon, just with a lockbox in the bottom corner.

You can find the recommended settings for your phone by googling Moto G Faux123 recommended settings, they're a picture album on Google+

your phone will be much better after doing all these things. You need to do these things. You will be very pleased with the results.

Try one of those "mini" browsers? They compress stuff on their servers before sending it to your screen. Quality of rendering is obviously not as good as native but for the most part they can get the job done. (Some sites may not get along with those browsers so you need to experiment)

Or you can try blocking images if your browsers support the feature. Root -> Adaway is another way to reduce memory footprint and general annoyances.

I have an older Android phone with only a single core CPU & 512MB RAM and Firefox w/ an add on that disables java script runs unbelievably well and has completely replaced the far inferior Opera Mini browser I was afraid I'd be forever doomed to use on it.

My Nexus 5 works flawlessly with the OpenVPN client connected to PIA. It's either your VPN provider or the app/client config.

It's not Android or your phone.

So the moto g is also killing active apps in the background when browsers are open? Was beginning to think it was a lg volt thing. Looks like the only real fix is buying a better phone.
