So here is what happened. Our phones all used WiFi or cable for service. The cable went out and we couldn't call anybody from our cell phones (because of poor coverage at our house) or our home phone (because it was with the cable company). It was all fine, till it wasn't.
The next day I went to get new service with proper cell coverage at our house
After several attempts to sell me on normal phones at full price I was ready to walk out with just sim cards and get a pair of S7s from eBay.
They offered an S6 for $400, no.
An S9 for $720, no.
A Moto E5+ for $225, better, but no.
And then the guy says how about a brand new Samsung Galaxy S8 for $199, um what? Heck yes! So he is still trying to sell me but I'm already sold. Take my money, right now!
