third person shooters really mess me up in small areas. funny thing is i have no issue with first person shooters, even the completely 3D ones like descent didn't give me any trouble. I think it's the unnatural camera movement of 3rd person shooters when you look around and walls get in the way (camera rapidly zooms in and out).

My God!!! Motion sickness due to gaming is real????? I gotta call up my friend and apologize for calling him chicken cos he couldnt take Unreal Tournament and threw up.

yah what you just described is nothing to do with motion sickness. lol

Thats like saying you get sea sick and start tripping balls.

Unfortunately I've seen these kind of comments far too often both with people complaining about gaming or in discussions about LCDs vs CRTs etc. It seem a lot of people are dismissive with logic similar to this: "[the issue] does not affect me, hence anyone who complains must be...[insert favourite taunt]"

But if you consider that display technologies are imperfect plus how different individuals respond to lights, their sight etc., I am quite open to the idea that some people suffer from issues while others using the same equipment / playing the same game do not. Therefore I would not dismiss somebody's complaints of motion sickness, being able to see the sub-pixels on LCDs (TN I guess), those able to see the 6-bit to 8-bit trickery on LCDs, and so on. Just because I can't see something does not mean it does exist.

Personally in gaming the only issue I can recall is with Skyrim: the blurring and effects shaders in dungeons gives me a headache. I turned off most of them in the INI but I still get it a bit. What amazes me is that somebody obviously spent a fair bit of time and effort developing those shaders but aside from my issues with them giving me a headache, I think most of them (the blood one, the blurry lights) actually make the game look worse. Not to mention they make the game look more console'ly (bad IMHO).

I was not being sarcastic with my comment.

Yeah. I realise how you could've considered it sarcasm cos when i re-read my comment i felt the same.
I did call him up. Cos i never knew such a thing existed and to ridicule him was seriously wrong. I actually thought that the blood and the gore got him nauseating. Seriously immature of me.

As others have mentioned, the lower FOVs from console porting is one factor. Its just doesn't look and feel good.

Yah i'm not saying its a issue, i'm just saying the symptoms don't match motion sickness.

it is a combination of FOV and nature of gameplay(how often you have to turn left and right to see what is around or behind you).

if you have to check your 6 o'clock for enemies in a UT style deathmatch, you'll be doing crazy ivans constantly vs a bf3 defined frontlines situation where you have a reasonable expectation of what direction the enemy will be coming from.

any game developer who adds in depth of field, head bob, or motion blur is just making the nausea issue worse, just so they can say they have a high tech sounding feature in the marketing list.

Ok, fair enough.

But sometimes people do have genuine issues trying to convey what they are feeling: they just know that something is making them feel unwell. I remember this LCD thread where someone was saying they were able to see the sub-pixles and that was giving them a headache. Now even with 20/20 vision the chances are nobody can actually see the sub-pixels at a normal viewing distance (and I think their problem may have been more to do with either CFCL backlight or colour dithering on LCDs) but the discussion deteriorated to focusing on 'sub-pixels cannot be seen' and 'LCDs are perfect' rather than trying to understand why for this person an old CRT was better for their eyes. Sort of like the old CDs are better than vinyl debates.

Looking back, I think the only thing that ever made me run to the bathroom to hurl was Doom on the PS.

I stopped by a friend's house and he was playing it; after about 5 minutes I started to get exteremely sick to my stomach, but like a dumbass I kept watching because I was intrigued. A few minutes later it got to be too much and I had to head for the restroom. Although I've experienced motion sickness here and ther in different games, that was the only time it was that bad.

I have no idea why the PS version of Doom had such a drastic effect on me.

Avoid flying a jet in BF3...that one really gets to me Admittedly, my poor piloting skills may play a small role.

Hmm..coming to think of it...Dark Souls actually got to me...Donno whether it was the frustration or what, but i experienced serious trauma, nausea and headache.

Not motion sickness but eye strain + nausea I remember first getting years back playing diablo for many long hours.

Maybe because you were watching someone else play. That's the only time it really bothers me, is when I start watching someone else play.

Heh... If I got a dollar for every such reply I get, I'd be a very rich man indeed. Did you even bother to fully read my post? Clearly you didnt understand what I wrote at all.

Borderlands gave me a massive headache. Had to stop playing it, but I don't think it was related to motion sickness.

Considering all the games I have played I am surprised that two games in particular have caused this effect in me, and no amount of adjusting the graphics and FOV seems to change it.

Borderlands and Borderlands 2.

Its not even as if the cartoon effect is particularly new, I have seen things like it in other games, heck many games used to look that flat. But no mater how many blur effects I remove and where I set the FOV I can not play these games for more than about 10 minutes. I would love to work out what it is in their graphics that cause the problem.

Glad to see I am not alone. I had no idea what was happening as I had never experienced it before, but after about 30 minutes of playing, my head was pounding and I felt like crap. Tried the game again and the same thing happened, so just stopped playing it completely.

I've been playing FPS's since 99ish and I have never had a problem until a few years ago playing Gears of War 2....the running/bobbing made me crazy sick. It seems like around that time I was playing Serious Sam (PC) and had to lay down for hours to shake the nausea off.

It's a bizzare thing....as many hours as I put in certain titles. I can do fine (usually) if I am the one controlling the mouse/keyboard but if I watch someone else play over their shoulder or on a "let's play" video on YouTube I am near puking in a few minutes.

Like others have said, take breaks and adjust the FoV as high as you can. Also turn off run/weapon bob (helps me!).

Good luck!

I don't think I've ever had motion sickness from a game and I'm not even bothered by low FOV's, but for some reason playing more than an hour or so of L4D2 almost always gives me a bad headache and/or nausea. Don't recall ever having anything like that in any other game I've ever tried.
