Mothers who smoke around their children.

StageLeft

I don't know what I really think about this...clearly it isn't good for the kids I guess, but what does everyone think? I'm not talking about being a smoking mother, but rather being a smoking mother and actually smoking in direct contact with your children (perhaps some of you have seen a mother holding a baby in one arm and a smoke in the other). Should these people be penalized for endangering their child or is it stepping on too many toes in that it is too directly telling a parent what is and isn't good for their children? Where is the line?

I know many mothers who smoke when they are pregnant stop for the duration and after birth never smoke in the presence of their children and thats great, but unfortunately more mothers do not stop than those who do during pregnancy...not sure on the stats of how many smoke in front of their children though.

When my mom was still smoking she did not do it while pregnant and only smoked outside away from the kids. The babysitter was a different story.

My dad smoked for roughly 6 years and he quit 15 years before I was born. My mom never smoked, but I've always thought I got Asthma due to my father's smoking.

Looking back I remember my father used to ocassionally smoke a pipe around us...but not too much and perhaps he was not aware of the side effects as much.

My mom kept smoking until she found out that she was pregnant (That's what she tells me). Then after I was born she was smoking for several years.
Thanks a lot, mom - I was born premature, and now I have asthma and all sorts of allergies 🙁

Yep. People suffer for the misdoings of their ancestors, yet another great example. That's how the world seems to work.

I think that parents who smoke in front of their kids should be punished! I mean its not fair to the kid he has to live with it, He really doesn't know what is happening to him. The parent/mother should go out and then smoke as far away from her kids as she can.

Wont take responsibility?

<<No how it works is today People blame others for their problems.>>

Careful, Red, that sounds like Republican territory to me.
😀

So its ok that parents destroy their childrens life because children have a weaker immune system than adults and second hand smoking can couse all sorts of decises. (damn my english🙂)

Cigarets are drugs, there is no diffference between them and maruana. The government wants people to smoke because they make alot of money from cigarette tolls and other taxes.

Cigarette smoke is harmful to kids. Especially during pregnancy there can a lot happen to the unborn child if the mother smokes or is around smokers. Although I don't know if punishing them would be a good idea, mothers should at least take responsibility and not smoke around their children.

What the government should do is spend money on letting people know what second hand cigaret smoke does to children. And in that campaign they should mark parents that smoke around their children as bad parents. This way the government is not telling people how to behave but rather telling them that what they do is not good for their children, or anyone for that matter.

I dont care if people smoke, that is their business, what I care about is wether smokers smoke around non smokers. Non smokers that are around smokers get the same chemicals in their system.

Parents that allow their kids to play violent video games should be punished

Parents that allow their kids to watch violent movies should be punished

Parents that swear around their kids should be punished

Parents that drink alcohol when their kids are present should be punished

Let me know when I've stepped on your toes.

<< What the government should do is spend money >>

Let's phrase that correctly.

"What the government should do is spend my money"

So, I ask you, is it allright to spend your money to let parents know the danger of second hand smoking?

I don't know a single person who is not already aware that smoking is bad for you and your children. Sad thing is some people just don't give a damn, and spending more money isn't going to help.

I think most people know by now that cigarette smoke is a poison, they're just too ignorant or addicted to care. The government has no right to tell people how raise their children, but parents should know not to be simply stupid. Different people raise their children in different ways, granted, but I think a smart parent would be able to look at the long-term for little Jonny and realize that they're making a mistake if they're blowing smoke in his face.

You know, if the people that spent half their time worrying about problems like these put half that effort into helping the children really in peril in the world, it would be a much better place. How many people here passing judgement donate their time and or money to help the starving children of the world? Or the kids that live on the streets that have no family? And as for the original question, you are right, parents should not smoke around their children, especially mothers holding a baby in their arms. But I don't have any right to tell anybody how to raise their kids, and neither do any of you.

Everyone knows it is dangerous and realy unhealthy. What I just dont understand is why the government just doesnt ban cigarets in their current form and wont allowe them untill the makers have removed all of the chemicals that are just there to make it more adictive. At least it wouldnt be as bad as before, people would have easier time quitting.

Kind of funny those that are becoming outraged in this thread are the smokers... Go outside and have a cig, and get that crap out of my face. Also, I never want to kiss an ashtray.
