motherboard with ddr2

Let's say I had an LG775 or whatever and a motherboard that didn't support ddr2. seeing as ddr2 is cheaper at the moment and also considering the possible future upgrade could I purchase ddr 2 and just run it at the slower speed of a standard ddr400 board?

What he said....aside from completely different row interfaces and such to reduce delays, different pin arrangements....its all at once or not at all.
