Motherboard turns on but won't post.

I have a old epox 8K7A mobo which was running fine until today when i tried to upgrade its cpu. I put in a 2000+ palomino, which the mobo couldn't identify properly, so i went back and put in the old cpu that was originally in it (800 duron). Now, the motherboard and all its fans, lights, etc come on, but the thing won't do anything else. It won't make a self-test post beep, i just get a 'FF' in the board diagnostic. Its really weird, i mean, i don't think the cpu is fried, since everything does come on, right? Both the new palomino and the duron do the same thing. I get no beeps, video, nothing. Just all the lights on the mobo, all the fans (including the cpu) work. Even the ethernet's card light is on. What gives?

Only thing i tried was clearing the CMOS and diconnecting the computer completely from the power. Nothing changes. My other guess is that since i had to put so much power in the heatsink to change it various times, maybe the mobo came in contact with the case and is shorting out? Is this the kind of behaviour i might get if that happens?

Thanks.

Did you clear Cmos prior to putting 800 back in? I would check that everything is seated correctly, check that ram has'nt been unseated sometimes we bang thiings around without our knowledge :)

but its definetly a burnt out cpu, right? I mean it wouldn't even turn on if that was the case, no?

meh, i have kinda given up. This is what i did:

1) removed the mobo from the case completely
2) removed cmos battery in addition to clearing the cmos with jumper
3) used a different psu
4) reseated ram
5) Used different cpus.

It just will not post. You could just leave the CPU in (no ram), and it still just comes on with no post. Any other suggestions before i leave this mobo (which i think i destroyed). :(

Anyway to test cpu's ram in different setup? Sounds like a cpu or bad bios issue if board powers up but no post beep etc....

typical dead motherboard. (power on but no post) been there done that. if you have done the proper benchtest and determine the mobo as the source, you can start rma process.

Hi all, I am the seller opf the CPU, which I got from purple hippo a few weeks ago, it ran perfectly for me, but the customer decided not to go ahead with the build and I built him a 754 based sempron64. I offered the 2000 for sale and then I got messaged about this thread....I have offered for the OP to send me the cpu and the motherboard in question so I can sort out what has happened...waiting on a reply from the op....
