Motherboard Toasting Modems?

A friend of my dad's brought his computer to me because the computer was blue-screening whenever he tried to connect (Modem: AOpen FM56-P), it'd bluescreen.

I tested and brought one of mine (Hiro H25354) and installed it in his system. Still blue screens. Tested it out again and now it's blue-screening here, too.

Is the motherboard eating modems? (IIRC, it's an AOpen AX6B)

Not sure if this matters or not, but I just remembered.

At the place where it says (IIRC) "Fatal exception XX," with the AOpen modem, it said 0E, with the Hiro, it said 06 (All I remember is that it wasn't 0E)

It could be the mobo. Although, the modem is PCI and it could just be that particular slot where you insert the modem. But if it did the same with your other modem then I would not keep on trying since you will eventually burn many modems. Next option is to get an external modem and connect using the serial port.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I want to put anymore of my hardware on my mobo. I've considered getting him a used motherboard for cheap (along with yet another modem)

As Jiggz stated...try another PCI slot and relax the Mem timings in the BIOS. Also check to see if it's assigning a specific IRQ (most common is 3 for externals)

that external modem would also be a lot easier than replacing the motherboard

The problem is is finding one around here. That, and there is the wonder of "Will something else go?"

I have two external modems I'd be willing to part with. One is a nearly new BestData 56SX v.92 and the other is a Cendyne v.92. Both have wall-wart power supplies, driver/software/docs CDs and phone cords. I may be able to find their "Getting Started" guides around here, but they are next to useless...
. Either could be yours for US$20. + shipping.

I live in Canada, so shipping would probably be steep.

All he does with the itnernet is check his e-mail and occasionally browse the web.

Airmail Letter Post would be in the vicinity of $6. for ground (claims 4-6 wks) or $7. for air (claims 7 days). And I forgot to mention that a data cable comes with either. That is by Letter Post service which can't be insured. If you want it insured, I'd have to use a more expensive class of service with insurance fee on top of that.
. I just bought some items from a fellow in the Toronto area - I think he padded the shipping charge a bit... He charged me over $10. and the items were lighter. I think the wall-wart alone weighs as much as the four items in that package. C'est la vie...

Uh-oh... He gave it to his brother to work on. Apparently he's always had prolems with it. I have that strange feeling where you have a problem where it's the system 'technician' that's causing it.
