Motherboard temps hitting 80º !!!

I am running Everest / MBM5 to check all my temps, my mobo (asus a8n-sli deluxe) what USUALLY sat at 35º ... has spiked to 78º and thats at idle....i am freaking out b/c im worried im going to damage my system, but theres also the possibility its a sensor problem? The other day i was tinkering with some wiremanagement and something caused me to absoultly FRY a molex connector i dont know what i plugged into it but as soon as i powerd up it filled my rig with some black smoke :S anyways i replaced the molex connector to the pci-e video card and the rig is back up but im thinking could i have caused damage to my mobo int he process?
