Seems like every mobo has some raid on it built in but how do they compare to an add in card and is there a preferred one? Thanks.

There are plenty of RAID cards that would not be 'faster' in high I/O environments than best-in-class integrated RAID, even a few costing upwards of $200, simply because the RAID ASICs on a number of add-in cards are no more capable than chipset-integrated RAID, just as dependent on the host CPU, and are on a slower connection than the high-speed low latency interconnects available to the chipset (dedicated).

To be certain that you'll always get faster I/O performance than class-leading integrated RAID, you'll have to open your wallet. The good hardware RAID cards start at around $300. There are a few up to $400 that aren't significantly faster than their $250 ~ $300 competitors (though you might get more features).

There are several factors that would influence whether an add-in RAID card would be superior to integrated RAID, none of them should be assumed in all cases to be one way or another.
 
I'm thinking of using a raid 1 array to protect important files so I take it onboard raid should be fine for this?
