Good question, I cant find the post right know, but apparently after win95(1st edition) does the harware detection after the install(or just running it for the the first time with a hardrive with it already installed on it)on a Kt133 motherboard, It asks for a reboot and bam, dead chip. It is one of the issues fixed with bios 2.1 for the MSI Pro2a, I don't know about the others. Hard to find info on it also.

Just reformat your HD, Windows 95 is finding a whole bunch of new hardware because it thinks it's still your old Gateway system! Your motherboard bios has nothing to do with your problem. Nothing can change the motherboard bios but you, Win95 can?t alter your bios either!

Your best option is to reformat and do a clean install if you can?t wait for you other hard drive to come.

Taking an old HD from an old Win95 system and sticking it in a newer system is like taking your old car oil and putting it in your new car. All the carp from the old oil will make your new car run like crap!

Well that?s where it was a bit confusing, because if he can?t reformat then he can?t flash bios. Well, at least we know one thing, that he?s not using bios version 2.1.

Now I would also like to know how the hell is Win95 able to do this? Espacially to the bios (if that).

Thats why he needs the new CMOS chip, or the hot-swap to reflash his bios. Seems odd to me also, I saw a thread in an early thread back when I was going to set up my new comp, I had an old Maxtor 8.4 gig hardrive with win95 1st edition on it that I was going to use. I formatted and installed with win2k instead (was going to dual boot)glad I didn't.

tjdavis: weren't you having some similar problem with your motherboard? rbv5 pointed me to your thread. you said the hot-flashing of the bios didn't work. did you try anything else? how is your mobo doing now? did you contact msi?

Save yourself the time and potential trouble of screwing up your friends machine and contact BADFLASH.COM. They will get you a new BIOS chip at a reasonable price and quite quickly. To hot-flash a chip safely, the mobo needs to be out of the case. You really want to tear down your buddies system ?? Sometimes the flash utility won't accept a different BIOS to flash. There is a general flash program that will do anything but for the life of me, I can't remember the name.

The best thing you have to do is get the RMA form from MSI(www.msicomputer.com/), fill it up, and fax it to their RMA department. Don't hold the phone forever. They'll call you right away. They'll probably send the bios chip for free, since you're not warned.

Don't try whatever you're not sure what you're doing. If you think it's too hard to pull it out, ask somebody who has experience. If you have nobody, you might ask any local computer repair shop with little fee.

Thanks DaddyG and BlueSky. I think I am going to follow your advice. Yeah, I don't wanna go to the trouble of taking my friend's comp apart, and I definitely don't wanna mess his comp up. I am going to fax the RMA to MSI first, and see if that does any good. If not, badflash.com seems like an excellent idea. Thanks for all your help, guys.

Could somebody tell me what is the best way to remove a BIOS chip? In particular, the BIOS chip on the MSI-K7TPro2-A. As I already said, it doesn't seem to be coming out easily, and I don't want to force it out w/o knowing exactly what I am doing. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Pyramix, not sure if this will help, but check this thread and pay particular attention to "mastertech01's" post.

Let me try that out. I am going to feel really stupid if that works. I could have done it a long time ago. Instead, here I am still without a working computer. I'll let you know if it works, although I doubt it is going to work (since my computer doesn't say anything when I try to boot, not even anything about the award bootblock sector). But I'll give it a shot anyways.
