Motherboard headache

I have a problem with a motherboard I can't figure out at the moment.
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2

I was working on it and forgot it was plugged in, and when I attched the 24 pin connector to the board, all 4 LED Phase lights lit up red for a second, the rear case fan spun for a second then nothing.

Took out the PSU and did the paper clip test..fine. Had the battery from the mobo out while I did this. Took out all the RAM and only have the 24pin and 8pin connector to mobo plugged in. I have the case power/reset button wires unattached, too. While disconnecting from the PSU, one of the four metal contacts on the molex connector got stuck and separated. It looks fubar'd to me.

What should I do from here? Can I start this pc without a power button attached? Just looking for some insight here. Thanks

That's hardly fubar. I'm sure it can be fixed. But yeah you should post a picture of the damaged part so we know exactly what you're talking about. "4 pin molex" sounds like an IDE HDD connector, but your context would seem to indicate the 4 pin motherboard plug.

As it has already been mentioned, it's not obvious what your problem is. Also, you could just use the reset button to turn on your comp (by connecting the reset button to the power pins). That is, for convenience if the connector attached to the wires coming from the power button got damaged or something. All the reset button does is that it shorts two pins.

I'll try the reset button out, thanks..That will help eliminate that 4 pin connector issue which I probably didn't describe right ...but..any ideas why the red phase lights and fan would start up for a second then stop? Just wondering how to go about looking for a short or anything that can point me in general direction. How can you tell 100% that a mobo is dead? Sorry if this seems trivial to some, but I'm inexperienced in this.

This isn't trivial to anybody this happens to, no matter how much experience they may or may not have. Usually, it is literally trial and error elimination -- eliminate each possible source of the problem until you finally are left with the motherboard as the only remaining source. And, even then, you may not be 100% sure until you finally replace the motherboard.

Granted, it is easier for some of us as we tend to have spare parts laying around that we can swap in and out as needed, or access to a spare system we can use to test individual parts.
