Hello :)

I've installed a new SSD, HDD, RAM, graphics card and OS and am generally happy with my computer, I will just get that out of the way first before anybody tells me to give up on my ageing machine! :p It is working perfectly and much better than before (even if it is very old/rubbish compared to most people's. I almost like how I had a slight challenge to get my old machine running ship-shape when some people were telling me to move on).

Anyhoo, I have one last problem. I installed some RAM and began to get freezes (which were un-un-freezable) and BSODs. I thought it was that stick of RAM despite it seeming ok in the PC I removed it from. When I remove the RAM the computer works fine, but just to be sure I tried putting it back in and removing the matching stick of RAM. Again the computer worked fine. It seems the RAM slot/RAM stick is not the problem but there is something about having 4GB of RAM which is the problem.

My options are
a) fix this problem
b) don't fix this problem. Is it best to have 2GB dual channel RAM, 3.5GB single channel RAM or 3GB single channel RAM? (I assume not the last one).

I am running 64-bit Windows 7 which I have just switched to (annoyingly, if I can't get 4GB RAM). My mobo is an old ASUS A8N-SLI. The RAM sticks are two Corsair 1GB PC3200 and two Micron 1GB PC3200.

When I do have 4GB installed it works fine for a little while. I had to turn off memory remapping in the BIOS and then turn it on again to get it to notice my memory (before that it said 4GB installed by 3GB usable). I cannot remember if I got any crashes before enabling memory remapping. Possibly there might be option c) which is to have 4GB installed without memory remapping, perhaps it would run 3GB usable memory as dual channel, I could check (though possibly it would still have crashes and may be no help).

Thank you for any help. Its' been a fun month but I'll be happy when my computer is 'done' and I can put the room back to normal instead of it being a computer workshop in here!

I have done some research (but still would appreciate advice) and
these say it's something to do with the BIOS:
http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-support/215127-4gb...
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/237858-44-working-p...
and these say something complicated (which I don't understand) about the RAM settings:
http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=108982
http://forums.hexus.net/pc-hardware/70793-anyone-have-4...

and this thread seems to have a ton of confusing/conflicting info: http://forums.cgsociety.org/archive/index.php/t-284263....

Somebody says this:
"I've been trying to make sense of this issue as well. It seems that the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium still has some sort of issue though with running 4GB (or sticks) of RAM, despite the processor revisions. I'm running 4gb no problem at 400.

Easy way to do this, put in 2 sticks, boot, go into bios and write down the memory settings it shows.
Shut down, install additional memory and boot again.
go into bios and just manually set the ram.
All done. You will now show memory running at full speed."

So…

I do not know about flashing the BIOS (I hear it is serious) or changing RAM settings, though I do know some BIOS stuff.

I realise this thread is very long but I thought I may as well include the research I'd done if I'm asking for help, plus there's always the chance someone else will need help and find the info all grouped together.

Thanks
Clara

Again sorry for the wall of text. My BIOS is the a8n-sli premium acpi BIOS revision 1007

I also found this conversation which is relevant:

Does anybody know more about this?

"With that MB when you fill all four Slots you may have to run the memory at DDR333 and I would set the memory Voltage to 2.75 Volts at Cas 2.5-3-3-7 and make sure that Command Rate is at 2T as well. But officially we do not suggest or support mixing memory like this."

Or this:

I had problems getting 4 sticks to work with my A8N-SLI Deluxe&Premium. (4x512, had to use DDR266-3-4-4-8 to be stable, where the stick ran rock stable DDR470-2.5-4-3-7 on DFI)

I was also running Corsair Valueselect 4x1GB (not anymore) on my DFI NF4 SLI-D at DDR500-3-4-4-8-2T."

Aha, you star!
As it wasn't even getting to the POST I figured the board (or a slot) might be screwed, but I set the memory timings back to Auto, inserted the modules and now it's up with 4GB

Seems to auto-detect the RAM at DDR400 if there are 2 modules in dual channel, but DDR333 if all 4 slots are in use... I had the memory settings tuned manually to the ratings on the modules (DDR400 2-3-3-6 1T) which works perfectly for 2x1GB.

Cheers, from one very happy Paul""

Thanks.

Since we don't know anything about your computer (hint: give us some details) I can only tell you some general recommendations:

The more sticks you have, the longer it will take for the CPU to get all the necessary information from all banks. This is less of an issue than it used to be, but still relevant.

Easy solution: buy larger sticks of RAM so that you are only using a slot or two.
No money solution: set your RAM to a looser timing than it was set at previously, and give it a little more voltage than you were before. A little extra voltage will not hurt it.

Also, are you overclocking this system? Adding more sticks will inhibit that as well.

Thanks for the reply. I have 4 sticks of 1GB RAM that I already own. My computer motherboard so old (only takes DDR RAM) that it isn't really possible to buy 2GB sticks and they might not work anyway but at the same time my computer does everything I want so I'm not looking to replace it. I've dealt with SSDs, HDDs, graphics cards and RAM but I don't think I'd be brave enough to replace an entire motherboard.

I'm not overclocking or anything like that (I don't really know how), I just want the 4x1GB sticks to work. If I can't do that then it would be useful to know if it is better to run 2GB dual channel or 3.5GB single channel.

I don't know much about RAM timings/voltages though I've seen posts that this might help.

I have a txt cpu-z report if that would help?

What is the make an model of the computer, or was it custom-built? What is the speed of the DDR?

If the sticks are different speeds, put the lowest speed RAM in slot 1. Usually the motherboard will have them marked.

I got it off someone I know longer know, I think it was custom built but don't actually know for sure. The RAM is all the same speeds. Here is cpu-z info, bear in mind that this was a scan I did when I had 3.5gb of memory in and was running single channel. The 4th stick (512mb) has been removed and replaced with one identical to the Corsair 1GB:

Put the Corsair in slot 1 (it's currently in slot 3) and see if that fixes the problem.

I would update the bios, just follow the instructions and you shouldn't have any issues.
Also you can manually set the memory voltage and see if that helps.
Google the model number of the memory and find a spec sheet with the voltage.

They are, but the Corsair stick is reporting a bit different timings in CPU-Z. Since slot 1 sets the timings, I would like to see the Corsair stick set those timings (assuming your board is set to run the memory in SPD mode) and see if that makes any difference.

The Asus MB manual for that board does say... ""Due to chipset resource allocation, the system may detect less than 4GB of system memory when you installed four 1GB DDR memory modules."

Doesn't sound like changing memory settings would help.
If a bios flash doesn't correct the issue, you're probably stuck with it.

I have personally overseen the scrapping of about five A8N based boards, they have very serious issues when they get old (as all now are) and need replaced.

I actually have several socket 939 motherboards here and every single time I have come across someone with an A8N board they have problems with it and sure enough putting their parts into my other motherboards they all work without issue.

That board is a lemon, replace it... sorry to say.

I actually have two dead ones in my closet I have had to replace recently, actually.

I figured out how to get it to recognise all 4GB of memory weeks ago (memory remapping), it's the BSOD and freezing I need to fix. :(

I've not tried flashing a BIOS yet because I've heard it's risky. :|

I see your point but don't know how to replace a motherboard, I really don't think I'm at that level/want to take that risk on a computer which is working really nicely. Having more RAM would be nice but it isn't worth the hassle/risk right now in my life or the cost of an entirely new computer. :|

Plus I think when you replace a motherboard you're likely to have to buy different RAM and other components to be compatible? So not really worth it atm when I only got this PC off somebody a year ago and just installed a SSD in it, so it still is pretty new and strong in terms of what I had before. :) Runs all my games great just wish I had a little more RAM for browsing (I had 2GB dual channel before).

If I can't get this to work am I better off with 2GB dual channel or 3.5GB single channel RAM installed? Thanks.

Ok when my PC is backed up I'll try this! Been a bit busy. :)

I'd give up but some people have made it work >.< e.g.
"I've been trying to make sense of this issue as well. It seems that the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium still has some sort fo issue though with running 4GB (or sticks) of RAM, despite the processor revisions.

I'm running 4gb no problem at 400.

Easy way to do this, put in 2 sticks, boot, go into bios and write down the memory settings it shows.

Shut down, install additional memory and boot again.

go into bios and just manually set the ram.

All done. You will now show memory running at full speed."

So when I research and know what manually setting the RAM means I could try this. :)

Also read something about "T2" being better? I'll see if my PC is set to that.

the command rate needs to be set to 2T or 2 cycles instead of 1 when running 4 sticks of ram with Nforce 4 boards unless you have a really good IMC on your CPU you also need to use higher DDR voltage usually 2.6 instead of 2.5 and it helps to up the north bridge's voltage as well (not sure what Asus called it as I used DFI back in the day lol.)

and set the ram timings to the worst of the bunch.

Ok thanks :)

If I still fail what is the best RAM to leave in? :) I know dual channel is good but if 4gb dual channel continues to crash should I drop down to 2GB or run single channel 3gb? Or even single channel 3.5gb using 1 512mb stick I have which def works in there but might not match perfectly.

Thanks

Ps. Can changing RAM timings go horribly wrong?
As in failure to boot? Yes. But, you can then clear the CMOS, and start over.

Memory Size 3584 MBytes
Channels Single
Memory Frequency 158.0 MHz (CPU/14)
CAS# latency (CL) 2.5
RAS# to CAS# delay (tRCD) 3
RAS# Precharge (tRP) 3
Cycle Time (tRAS) 7
Bank Cycle Time (tRC) 10
DRAM Idle Timer 16
Command Rate (CR) 2T
Basically, try changing that to 3-3-3, from 2.5-3-3, and set the speed for 133/266MHz (it's set at 166/333MHz, right now).

Also, if they're not, already, try putting each pair of sticks in their respective slot pairs. The board should be arranged with one channel's pair of slots together, a space, then the other channel's pair of slots. The first configuration I'd try is with the Corsair (looser) in the right-most slot pair, and the Micron in the left-most (due to recommending filling the slots in order of B1, A1, B2+A2).

Okey-doke. Just checked and the DRAM thingy seems to already be T2. I'll do a CPU-Z scan with just the Micron RAM sticks in (in slot 1 and 3) and then put in the Corsair in also to see if anything changes in a scan and if it does then I set the memory settings to either what timings showed when I had only two sticks on or the worst of the bunch?
