Good Day,

I have an Asus P4P800 Deluxe mobo with a P4 2.8 Ghz 800 Mhz cpu. I did some hard drive changes last night and when I powered on I got two things: 1) an audible from the mobo saying "system failure" and a smoke smell. (I know..not good)

I shut it down right away and looked around, but could not locate the source of the smell. So, I rebooted with the case off and everything seems to power up, but no video. So, I use my AMD system to test my power supply, my memory, & my video card. The motherboard has a light that shows and it will post a beep if no memory is installed. It does not beep when a video card is left out. I pulled the heat sink off the processor and it did heat up when power was on.

I don't know how to test the processor or the motherboard so that I know which one to replace. I am under a time crunch and really need this system back up.

Any ideas?

Thanks

O.K. an update. I brainstormed and remembered a friend with an Asus P4PE mobo. I popped out my 2.8c processor and ran over to his house. It posted and ran just fine in his PC.

So, I have swapped the ram, the video card, & the processor to other computers and they seem to be working just fine. I grabbed a 350W PS (that I know is good) and connected it to my PC and got the same results, so I don't think it is my PS.

I think I am dealing with a deat mobo. My gut tells me to order a new mobo for my 478 P4 processor and a new PS just for good messure.

Any thoughts? Do you agree?

You probably fried a regulator or shorted something out. NEVER leave the power cable connected to the computer while working inside. Even with the mobo powered off there's still voltage going threw it. Just dropping a screw on the mobo in the right place will toast it (been there, done that, bought the t-shirt!).

Always pull the power cord or (better yet) if your PSU has a kill switch on the back, use that instead. e

Thanks for everyone's thoughts.

I currently have an Asus P4P800 Deluxe (for sale: cheap).

Is the P4P800-E Deluxe worth the extra cash? Any other mobo you suggest?

Thanks
