Motherboard for GPU computing

I need to setup several workstation for an academic project, very much like this ( http://fastra2.ua.ac.be/ ).

The target video card is the AMD HD5850 and I need to use as many of them as possible.

Luckily the problem is neither CPU nor memory bound, so even an Athlon X2 is enough, and GPU can use even a X4 or X1 slot.

I think I have two options:

1) Use a PCI splitter, but I dislike this option.

2) Find a motherboard with as many PCI slots as possible, with them evenly spaced to host full size cards.

I need to use at least 3 cards per motherboard, 5 or 6 is even ideal.

Which motherboard would you use now?

Which motherboard would you use in four months?
