MotherBoard for Duron 800mhz

I would love suggestions on what is a good mobo for an AMD Duron 800mhz chip. The computer is going to be used for internet surfing, word processing, watching movies and the odd game (like C&C red alert).

I am looking at This DFI board off of e-bay.

Thanks for your replys!

Nforce or Nforce 2, many varieties available at newegg, and itll leave you a halfway decent upgrade path so you can get a 2500+ down the road for ~$50

Edit: buying hardware on ebay is the debil.

I already have a 2.0ghz p4 9600XT etc. This is simply a 2nd computer so that 2 people in my family can do school work or whatever it is at that same time insted of 1 person surfing and the other wating 10 minutes for a webpage to load.

I found this link to a seller right on anandtech who has a few of these boards. Not sure which one is the best tho. If you guys could help me pick one out to make an offer on that would be great!

Practically any SocketA mobo will work. For that speed SDRam or DDR doesn't really matter, in fact at one time SDRam was clearly better, but that may no longer be true with newer chipsets. As Acanthus suggests, might as well get a fairly recent mobo/chipset, you may be satisfied with that for mow, but you may want to upgrade it in the future.

I dunno about this. But one sure thing is that DDR is a lot cheaper than SDRam. 🙂

Newegg prices:
Kingston PC133 256mb: $84 (retail)
Kingston PC2700 256mb: $45 (retail)
Kingston PC3200 256mb: $45 (retail)

Of course, you'll never reach the full potential of PC3200 ram with your Duron. 😀 But you'll have some good ram when you'll upgrade your CPU.

That's why I'd suggest a DDR capable motherboard (upgrade possibility + ram cost, as well as "newer" technology). It may cost a little more, but you'll make it up when buying the Ram. 😉

Look for a KT266A board from any of the big manufacturers.

yeah, good idea.
I saw some A7V266-E's on Ebay for really cheap.. brand new in box for like $50 Canadian.
those are great boards.

Check NewEgg's Refurbished motherboards. They usually have a Socket A board for less than $40, or a Socket A-Nforce board for ~$50.

he's not lookijng to upgrade anytime soon, just something, anything cheap that will run an 800mhz cpu
probably will be used indefinitely anyway 😀
I would suggest those pcchips on newegg, their cheap, ddr capable,ata133 and will even work with amd xp latest core provided that its 266 FSB

btw, i wouldnt buy mobo from ebay. it's a one shot deal and if something goes wrong your out $$$ 🙁

Even if you got it for $5.99, he wants $15.25 for shipping ! (21.75 total ATLEAST) I got an A7N8X refurb from newegg for $35 shipped ! That PCchips board may not be good quality, but thats NEW and shipped for that price.

Personally, I wouldn;t bother with a Duron 800. I would get a Barton 2500. They have Fry's specials with a Barton 2500 and a motherboard for $70 all the time.

personally?! this dude doesn't wany to pay more then 30 bucks just to have something to surf the web, and play divx. i wouldnt either, it isn't wise money spent 🙂
even ogm will do fine which requires at least 100 percent of his processor resources at 800mhz 😀
just look at the rating for that pcchips mobo, most are satisfied and so should he. Think of getting one myself, lol. but as of this moment, my cheap sdram based mobo is working mighty fine.
It's a commate brand that no one has heard of and has been out of production since 2001

btw, stay away from refurb. Its cheap but it has problems most of the time ranging from frying your power supply, to defective onboard audio/controller, to constant crashes 🙁

I'd agree 100%, though if he already has a bunch of SDRam collecting dust, hmm, maybe he should sell it. 😀

You can get a full featured board (graphics, NIC, sound) for like $45bucks shipped+new at newegg. Just search mobo's under 50bucks and you'll get a ton of results. That would be the best way to go since a cheap vid card will run you some $30bucks. A NIC + soundcard+ graphics card prolly cost more than the mobo! 😛 Im going to use these boards to cluster a bunch of 2400+'s and crunch F@H.
