I was thinking about upgrading my excisting motherboard and cpu. I am leaning towards a Athlon xp, probly the 1800mhz since it is going for pretty cheap right now.

Right now I have, a antec case and power supply, gforce3 ti 500. What I will need is a motherboard, and a cpu.

If you where to do a upgrade right now what would you upgrade to? Id like to keep it under $200, but I am very open to suggestions, specially if spending $100 is well worth it.

Thank you very much

Hmm...tough call. That's not a bad mobo at at all but it doesn't support DDR which would give you a speed boost. On the other hand it might support an 1800 XP though...(check Abit's web site first though).. and that would give you a pretty good boost in speed with no other changes. That would get you by for a while and AMD's Hammer is just around the corner.

I have the KT7A-RAID mb and versions 1.0 - 1.2 do not officially support XP processors, but they will work in most of them. Just flash the most current bios. What have you got to lose? Version 1.3 does support XP cpu's. As for upgrading, I would stick with ASUS, MSI, Epox, and, of course, Abit. If you do change your mb, you will most likely have to upgrade your ram to DDR, yet another expense. I am in the process of upgrading the mb (Abit KX7 333R), the ram, and the cpu. Of course this is your budget and it will cost a little more than you think. So, if you want to keep the dollars to a minimum, just update your bios and give it a try. If that doesn't work, then replace with your old cpu and save your dollars until you can afford the cpu, ram, mb, and a good hsf (you're gonna need it).
