I have an old Compaq Presario 1690 laying around my shop that needs a replacement DVD drive. After breaking it open to see what all I would need to replace i started looking online for parts (e-bay has a ton of parts for these old peices of crap) I noticed some mobo's for the 1800 series. Now these use an intel chipset that can support PIII processors. The cases look the same and I bet the power supply's are too. Do ya'll think I can swap out the mobo and processor for this. I wasn't ever a big fan of the older AMD stuff and I'd like a little more power for it. The presario 1690 uses a standard K6-2 400mhz. If I can't swap out the mobo can I upgrade this to a faster K6-2 processor? Any help would be apreciated.

P.S. I also noticed that the "onboard RAM" that crucials memory configurator says is non removable is actualy a regular ole 64MB 144-pin SODIMM module in a slot. I bet this can be upgraded too. :Q

No offense but I think you may be beating a dead horse. Laptop prices aren't really that bad nowadays for general use machines, which sems like what you are looking for. I think it may just be time to get a new notebook.

for less than a c-note i can get an old laptop up and running with minimal effort. I have three other laptop's for everything major but this one will be a good e-mail browser, or snapstream client to play my divx collection. I hate throwing away stuff especially when a few bucks and some elbow grease will make it functional.
