Single Mom Claims City Illegally Issued $105,000 In Parking Tickets

An unemployed, single mother says she’s trapped in a parking ticket nightmare so now, she’s suing.

The story begins four years ago when Jennifer Fitzgerald said her former boyfriend bought a used car from her uncle for $600.

He registered it in her name without her knowledge, and then three years ago, abandoned it in a parking lot at O’Hare Airport.

Since then, the car has racked up nearly 700 parking tickets and the city says Fitzgerald owes over $105,000.

According to TheExpiredMeter.com, that’s not just a city record but, could be a world record.

Her driver’s license has been suspended.

In a lawsuit filed by a lawyer who’s taken on her case for free, Fitzgerald says the city violated its own policy by not impounding the car three years ago and instead, continued to ticket it over and over again.

It's all about the revenue.

Similar to the Tollway trying to get $27,000 from me last year at this time on a computer error on their part.

To be fair, it's more likely to be all about the incompetency.

And this is why we need smaller government, you do realize government likes these fines since its more money for them

I'm tired of people acting like we should have more sympathy for someone because she's a single mom.

Yeah, I almost laughed when I saw that nugget places in the story. If she is truly not liable, what does being a single mom have to do with it?

I got hit with $1300 in parking fines, which I paid last month. Even if I did rightfully owe it, it makes me consider leaving this place.

Yup, i bet it will get reduced to 1-2 tickets tops. If the city was that worried about the car it should had been towed.

Negative, the city would still have charged for the tow to an impound yard and charging a daily impound fee, storage fee and admin fee, probably would still be close to the $105,000 anyway.

My bike was impounded in Florida a couple of months ago and cost $750 for one day so down there after 800 days it would cost me $600,000.

Should have been towed and then takeb care of. There had to be some way of contacting her. Immoral to expect her to pay that eveb if it was her car in my opinion.

Lol wut??

I've had my car impounded once and it was only $200 to fork over. And that was because the apartment I was living in at the time was slimy with working with impound lots for extra cash. They purposefully went around and made little tiny red paint dots that looked like they were scratched off old red paint on the curbs. Which made it hard to determine which parking spots were actual spots or fire zones. They also didn't have enough parking for all the people living there. Only reason I lived there was because I had to for a few months. Left that place asap when I got the chance.

Anyhow, I know you are telling another grandiose fib here on the costs you incurred dave because I've had the same experience and mine was far different. And looking up daily storage rates for Orlando shows a cost of $20 a day.

Possibly but they didnt and thus have violated their own policy. And I am sure there are is probably a law on the books about excessive fee's for these types of situations. 600K in impounding fee's on a car worth 3500 will be hard to justify.

Dave pays different prices than the rest of us for things. $750 per day for impounds, $5.00+ per gallon for gas, $50,000 for an attorney for traffic court. I don't know why he gets higher prices, but I do feel bad for him.

Just googling impound storage fee costs brings prices from $20 to $40 tops. LA is $35 for example.

He reminds me of this kid I used to know growing up that had to grossly exaggerate everything to get attention. Or maybe it was that fat kid off goonies. In fact, why do I picture that fat kid everytime I read one of his posts? Must be subliminal.

It wasn't Orlando.

It was State of Florida Highway Division. Contracted Company was TriCounty towing.

Here is website with a link to complaint by people that have been ripped off by this Company as well.

This was from 2009 so obviously went up a lot more since then.

Hookup- $110.00
Mileage- $75.00
Time on scene -$156.00
Storage- $78.00
Administration Fee- $36.00

You can call them and ask them to pull up my file with the $750 they charged me.

What the fuck is that racket, I'd have my attorney destroy them on that bullshit. Time on scene? Last time it paid $25 with AAA to have a Range Rover towed some 15 miles (on a 2ton 12speed flatbed truck with airbrakes). Ridiculous.

I came in here thinking it was a stay at home mother with a rich hubby... if that was the case, I was going to say, damn right, stick it to her. Hope she pays it the 105k and then some....
but since it's a single mom with no job, I hope she sues her way into the 1%

If you are going to quote, get it right.

It was $27,000 for Illinois Tollway not an attorney.

They finally admitted to computer error and reduced it to $195.

Should not have had to pay anything as my account was valid and they were taking money out.

Speaking of flat bed.

They put my Motorcycle on a flat bed and then proceeded to drive up and down the Turnpike all night long.

I had a Sun Pass on the bike.

I got a bill for $75 in toll charges for the night because they charged truck rates.

how much the person has shouldn't play into it.

The car was not hers, she didn't know about it, they should have fallowed there rules and towed it instead of sitting on it.

She shouldn't have to pay. she did her best to get them to tow and stop doing it.

I don't care if she makes 100 million a year or 100 a yeah. right is right and wrong is wrong.

the city is wrong in this case.
