Mother Board bad?

HI,

At the beginning of the summer my little sister's computer went bad. At start up, right after the ram loads and right before the computer begins to check for IDE drive it freezes. It just stops there, i can't even go into bios. Not wanting to deal with this i went and bought a new motherboard/cpu combo at frys. I bought the atholon 2200+ xp with ecs motherboard, pretty sweet upgrade from her p3 700mhz, and all for 80 bucks. Anyways, i installed it, and it worked fine. She had 128 mb of sdram so i took a 128 chip from my old computer and put it in as well to make it 256. Then by the end of summer (about 2 weeks ago) she had the same error, the computer just froze at that same exact point. How would the computer work fine for 3 months and suddenly produce the same exact problem, even with a different motherboard and cpu. Do you guys think it might be the hard drives or cdrom? All of her original hardware was kept in there, except for the extra 128 mb of ram i put in and also an extra 6 gig hard drive that i thought she might want as well. Sorry i can't provide more information about the system and such, i'm not at home yet, but i will gather the information this weekend if you guys/girls would like to know. Any suggestions? I don't want to buy a new motherboard unless i'm absolutely sure this problem isn't caused by existing hardware in her computer.

in addition, no beeping or anything

Thank you.

Might be a bad PSU - cheap and easy to replace - Just make sure it is big and bad enought for your system.

Before you try that, might wanna try putting the BIOS back to default - worked for mine, for what reason, I don't know!

Power Supply Unit. AMD is very picky about it. My stepson's comp was behaving erratically. I had no clue why. It would just hang at time, or reboot for no reason. New power supply fixed that. Get a good psu. Go with the Fortron FSP350-60PN. I used it on 6 different computers, 1 Intel, 5 AMD. It's $42 shipped from newegg.com. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure if its the power supply though cause this problem occurred before hand. With a pentium, but i'll swap out a power supply to test. And the computer just stays at boot up right after ram loads and before the IDE check, so i can't even go into bios.

Hum, do you have case with USB ports in front that connect to the motherboard? If you do, double check the connection.

No, i don't have a case with usb ports in the front, i think imma just send the motherboard into the manufacturer, i have a 1 year warranty on it, but i'd like to make that a last resort.

Swap the HD out with another one, or use the 6GB as a dummy drive and install an OS on it and see if it works. It might help to disconnect all of the IDE devices and go from there - if you can't get into the BIOS with only video, RAM, and processor hooked up and running it sounds like a motherboard problem.

Otherwise one of the devices could be messing it up, or possibly even the RAM. Just my two cents.

Alright, the hard drive is bad, and since this is the second time it happened with the same exact error i'm going to throw away the old and get a new, thanks for your help!

bump!

alright, i haven't had time to work on this computer yet due to exams and such, but i tried last night and here is what happened. Originally i thought it was the hard drive that was bad. Well, i used the jumper in the motherboard and set everything back to default. When i try to load up the computer again, bios tried to detect a hard drive and found one. (note: a hard drive wasn't set in bios since everything is at default) then windows load up. Now, the computer seems fixed, but i didnt want the computer to take 2 mins to detect a hard drive everytime it loads up. I then went into bios, set the hard drive, and now the computer is back at the same problem. It just hangs right after memory test. I tried different rams already, still no go. I reset the bios settings, but the same thing just happened over again. Do you guys think its a bio setting? Or maybe i have the cables all screwed up somehow? Don't know yet, i'm gonna work on this computer at winter break since i won't have enough time now to look at it, but some input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is the hard drive Western Digital per chance?? Even if it 's not, try setting the jumper to cable select. I had the problem where it would take forever to load. I emailed Albatron, thinking that it was the motherboard. Couple of months later, read somewhere that the WD kinda picky about the jumper setting. Change the jumper to cable select, problem fixed. Hope this fixes it.
