Most you've won off a scratcher?

I've pretty much stopped playing in our office pool and this morning I decided to get a scratcher. Won $20. Unfortunately, not quite enough for hookers and blow, but it'll pay for a decent lunch. What's the most you've won?

Almost every day I run into the owner of local engineering firm playing scratchers at the 7-11. A few times a year while I'm bs'ing with him in the parking lot, he'll get a winner and show me. I've seen him win a few thousand off a scratcher, but he'll freely admit he's spent more than he's won. I don't play often, and $20 is definitely the most I've ever won.

$250 which is kind of crazy considering how rarely I play. Every once in a while I'll get an urge to buy a ticket or two but since I know that the lottery is just a "tax on the stupid" it isn't that often.

10 dollars.
Bought 10 more.
Lost all.

A year later I took a statistics class and learned how its basically legalized theft.

$10 on a ticket I found on the ground. I used to be diligent about picking them up, and found a few winners, but haven't fooled with it in awhile.

Pro tip, the wrong side of town is the best place for ticket hunting. The people are dumber, more likely to be fucked up, and not coincidentally, tend to buy more tickets. Since they're barely literate, there's more chances to find a winner when they toss it out(Usually on the ground cause trash likes trash).

I don't have a link or anything but I think it has been rather well established that the poor buy a shitload more lottery tickets than any other demographic. Sure your middle class office mates might come together for a pool every now and again when the jackpot reaches an absurd size but by and large I think the poor/lower middle class/dumb people make up the lions share of the sales. As I said in a previous post, it's a tax on the stupid.

Have never played... I'm even Steven. I think lotteries are a plague upon the public. I remember when there weren't any, also when there were no casinos in California.

IIRC, I've never participated in public gambling. Some poker games when I was in high school, one or two since, but they were private affairs. Those were fun, but I have no desire to participate in legally sanctioned gambling. Gives me the willies.

I've won $100 a few times, just when I needed it too. (Well, I guess that's most of the time.) Lately though, been spending more than I've been winning.

That's the way it goes with organized gambling, the house always wins, they set it up that way. It's the same way with insurance companies, the actuaries use mathematical systems to guarantee it. Sure, there are exceptions, a miniscule percentage of players hit it big, but the odds are against you. IMO, it's a waste of time. There is an argument for it, I figure, being that you are paying for the right to dream of what you would do if you suddenly had a lot of money. There's a benefit in that I guess. But then, there's a lot to be said for getting off the golden calf.

A guy at work won $5 million. I got $2 on a free one someone gave me, I've never bought one.

Maybe 6 bucks. Biggest damn rip off. I'd rather blow my money on the 3 tickets with the same numbers for Lotto and the three tickets with the same numbers for Mega Millions. Perhaps when I retire I'll hit the damn thing.

i have never played the lotto

but for some reason i was really tempted to get a couple tickets at a gas station the other day

then i realized it would just be better statistically to make another taxable account contribution

You don't need to provide a link to prove that. It's pretty obvious to everyone with common sense that lower income/education families buy more lottery tickets.

Personally, I've spent about $20 on lottery tickets and won about the same.

That's a false assumption. My great uncle was pretty damn well off and played the lotto. He won twice too. First was the Illinois Little Lotto and the second time he got like 5 numbers right on the Illinois state lotto.

Never played. Every morning when I hit the store to get my liter of vodka, I'm tempted, but then I just think of all the money I'd waste that I could spend on booze and cigarettes.
