Russell Crowe is 2nd to Morgan Freeman

Russell Crowe is rather one dimensional, even if his roles have been on different extremes. The way he plays people are always the somewhat timid, soft spoken person, but not someone you want to mess with.
Always plays a character who's timid, soft spoken, but not someone you want to mess with? Have you seen any of his movies in the last 5, 6 years?

Morgan Freeman, one of the best actors of all time

but he's not that versatile. He plays the same role everytime. The role of hte older wise man who knows it all.

I agree with Tom Hanks being one of the best versatile actors in recent times. Although I don't think Johny Depp fits that role. He is a great actor, but all his roles have always been him playing an offbeat character.

I think we will find Christian Bale to be an very good actor who can play versatile roles. He was exceptional in Batman Begins, American Pyscho, and the Machinist.

You forgot Christian Bale in Equilibrium.

haven't seen that yet.

Denzel, while good, overacts in many roles, IMO.

though he was awesome in Man on Fire

Yes, have you? He's never the most talkative person in Beautiful Mind, Gladiator, Cinderella Man, but who would want to actually mess with him?

Jonny Depp sucks all around
Morgan Freeman is a great actor and I think he is fairly versatile (All speculation really since he gets typecasted)
Edward Norton is an AMAZING actor and very versatile, I would probably give the title to him
Tom Hanks is also a good actor and extremely versatile.
Russel Crowe sucks but has some decent movies.

Since you didn't actually nominate him, just said you're surprised he hasn't been:

Tom Hanks sucks.

Harrison Ford is the greatest actor alive. Anyone who says differently is a fool.

Point missed.

Ford's very good, but notice the similarities among his roles. That's not versatility.

I'm not counting Sabrina either. I'm counting his good roles.

Sabrina with Ford was one of the greatest movies ever.

I'm going to have to go with Jenna Haze. She plays the role of the ditzy, giggly, brainless porn starlet quite well.

Other than her, I'm going to go with the late, great JT Walsh.

I think Jack Nicholson is the most versatile actor today but another versatile actor is Kevin Spacey.

That was my first thought. He's the most believable actor I can think of.
He delivers anything and takes you 100% where he's going.

At the risk of being pounded, John Travolta does an excellent job delivering his characters and he's done damn near everything in his career.

Bruce Willis is one of my favorites, too.

Johnny Depp is pretty incredible.

Robin Williams has really shown some diversity recently too. One hour photo was quite a change from his traditional roles.
