Most trusted/reputable LCD brands are.....

All LCD panels are made in the same 3 or 4 factories in China, Korea, and maybe Taiwan. Buy which ever one looks decent to you and be relieved that until you touched it, your LCD was never touched by American hands.

Buy the warranty.

ViewSonic
Samsung
Dell
Apple
Sony

All similar panels.. Apple and Dell are both LG. Dell's 2405 is a BenQ panel I believe

so since i won't be buying apple (too expensive) or dell (i trust the others more with monitors quality) my options will be narrowed down to: Viewsonic, Samsung or Sony

If I were you, I'd reconsider on the Dell choice. Not only are prices from them substantially cheaper (20" LCDs having been available for ~$400 within the last month), but they use the exact same panels as other manufacturers- the 2005fpw is the same panel as the Apple 20" screen (LG glass, actually), the 24" panel is a new samsung panel; the 2001fp is LG glass as well, etc. Not to mention that Dell has a 30 day satisfaction guarantee, which means that you can get a monitor replaced for even one dead pixel.

Yup. Same with CRT's.
But I think Sony and Dell seem to buy a great deal of high quality displays and add nice features.
I cant comment on Apple LCD's.

I have a cheap Iiyama for my office computer. It seems to be OK. No visible bad pixels after 4 months.

Anyone have any view on Eizo?

I was thinking of a FlexScan L778 - expensive, yes, but the specs are awesome.

Yeah... They may all use the same PANELS, but they are all free to use THEIR choice of controlling hardware( the electronics that are in the display controlling the output of the glass) -Hence, you will see fluctuations in performance/quality of image between two different manufacturers using the same panel.

Also, you will see different implementations for screen adjustments between manufacturers using the same glass panel -ie; some use a software applet you MUST install on your computer (not the favorite interface for those of us running these types off of KVM switches) - or they will have on monitor button controlled menus/adjustments.

So.. There are plently of differences.

Likewise, until I met my lovely wife to be in Korea, she had never been touched by American hands either...
