Most singers don't sound as good live.

They strain and are sometimes off key but not Céline Dion. Always perfect pitch and she makes it look effortless even as she hits the high powerful notes. What a set of lungs and vocal cords. Such emotion too, yet total control. The ultimate pro and the real pop diva.

I've heard it said that the version of that song used on the movie soundtrack was the first take and this is often the case with her. She nails the songs right away.

big label, over produced 'musicians' generally sound like crap live because they have very little talent.

real musicians tend to sound great live.

I remember hearing Avril Lavigne performing live at some music awards show and she was just god awful. They must use the mixer on her voice big time.

She still give me the creeps, big time!

Bands I've seen that sound just as good live/better/or uniquely different that its ok either way.

Radiohead
TV on the Radio
Flaming Lips
They Might be Giants
The Black Keys(but they record with the most basic of equipment so thats to be expected)
Sigur Ros
Bjork
Rage Against the Machine
Arcade Fire
LCD Soundsystem
The good the bad and the queen
Dave matthews Band

Bands that don't sound good live I've seen...or not as good.

Sad to say, but Modest Mouse as a whole does not sound good. Still a fun show, very energetic, but the sound is crap.
Blink 182 was the worst show I've seen in my entire life

Hrmm well I guess I choose concerts that aren't full of crap artists.

Exactly. Ever notice the amount of "singers" that start out as actors? Disney is famous for this. They have to enhance the singer's voice with so many effects and backup singers, yo can't hear the supposed star anymore. Then when they play live, it's got to by lip synced or you wouldn't be able to stand it.

Today's music industry has really cheapened the value of talent by giving people "artificial talent" via technology. It's sickening really, and because this crap is flooding the market, the people that we would actually want to listen to get lost in the crowd.

Back at college, I went to a TON of live shows... I even was on the stage crew for the Tonic / Third Eye Blind show that came around. I've gotta say, most of the shows were great. Tool sounds near CD perfect but better. They Might Be Giants were fantastic live. Ska bands are usually right on target with their sound... Of course, this was almost 10 years ago now and I don't really goto shows anymore.

The first experienced that really soured me was at the same concert I worked for... Tonic came out and were truly great. They sounded just wonderful (and as a plus, came out after everyone left and offered to go with us all to the bar... too bad we had to finish working). Third Eye Blind however sounded NOTHING like their studio recordings. I walked out of the show and hung around with the medical crew waiting for the pain to end. Truly AWFUL.

Yeah, well, when singing is all about the fame and glory, there is no talent behind it.

You only need to look as far as REAL musicians to see a good live performance. Stay away from that corporate shit-crap if you like music. If you like looking "cool" and having something vapid to talk about, then by all means, listen to empty music like that.

Last year I saw:
the Killers
Flogging Molly
Street Dogs
AFI
Jet

Flogging Molly and AFI were definitely the best sounding bands.

AFI being almost like listening to the cd.

Flogging Molly was the best concert I've ever been to. Most fun, most energetic, left feeling totally amazed by the experience.

The Killers sounded pretty good. Especially after seeing them on TV when they first got popular and I thought they sounded terrible. They really surprised me.

Street Dogs were pretty good as well (esp. if you like punk shows)

Jet was pretty bad. Played forever and I left early.

Everyone will laugh, but probably of the two best sounding concerts I've ever been to were Garth Brooks & George Strait ... some of the worst? Crazy Town, Linkin Park (though I've heard they got better) & the Dixie Chicks. Foo Fighters are coming to H-Town on Jan 22nd though, and I HAVE to go see them ... from the concerts I've seen on TV, they're pretty spot on, with some minor mixing notices (mostly when Grohl's singing main and the mix in the background is done by the guitarists) - still looks like it'd be a lot of fun.
