I'd have to say that the ball-bearing is about the most useful thing mankind ever dug out of the earth. It seems to be used in some capacity in absolutely everything. Your thoughts?
 
Fire and agriculture got us a stable base to build a civilization on. The wheel allowed trade, and the printing press gave us the ability to communicate even more effectively. Then the steam engine and electricity gave us power and the abillity to build bigger, better, and faster. Now we had reliable food sources, free access to information, and the power to build on it.

Then the internet came along and civilization began a slow backslide.
